Or you could put a small solar panel on the floor of the garage and claim the door has to be open for solar power access.  Most states have rules prohibiting blocking of solar or wind power access?..

Near Ansheiser Busch in Va. near Williamsburg they built several high end settlements - or whatever they're called - and went so far that they demanded the furniture matched the style of the house - a Spanish rancher had to have Spanish furnishings, etc.   A bit too controlled for me.

 

Then there's a house in downtown Richmond, Va. that is painted in shades of soft purple, pink and orange which probably spurred some HOA's.

Damn, didn't know it could get so bad...

Where my parents live, they only really care that you don't violate zoning rules, facades, additions, etc. essentially all modifications to your home. Aside from parking, there was nothing they would try to control as far as how you lived.

Forest Hills Gardens, a great Queens gem. :)
