Picture this - 1978, 3:00 a.m. on a school night.  I'm living in Novato, CA, about 35 miles north of Burlingame, just south of San Francisco. I get a call - do you own a tan '66 VW sedan?  yeah, (thru the haze) - did you loan it to anyone?  Uh, no, but I have a few questions for you - who is this, what time is it, and why are you asking?  This is the Burlingame police, it's 3:00 in the morning and we have your car here with four teenagers.  Call your local police and file a complaint - here are their names - blah, blah, blah, and Blah.

Novato police come - I tell them that blah, blah, and - - - - One officer interrupts me and gives me the other two names.  Hmmmmmm.

Two 16 y/o girls, one 17 y/o male and one 18 y/o male.  They hot wired the car and were joy riding about.  Police said they stopped them for a "tail light" violation.  At the hearing - the fathers of the two girls were busy doing paper work (no cell phones or computers then) and hardly paid any attention to the proceedings.  The young male was not represented that I could see.  Later in S.F. court, the 18 male perp was shackled and trudged out - ordered to make restitution for damages (window and headliner) and time served.  I did get a check for the full amount.

The notorious little joy riders are now about 50 years old.  Wonder what ever happened to them - - wonder if they are alive?
