I have no guns but will hack to death anyone who touches my Ferrari stuff!

I know I am carrying the whole Italian theme thing too far

My brother gave me a yard sign like that for Christmas that has a target silhouette with a bunch of holes in it. The caption reads "Nothing inside is worth dying for."

Aside from letting thieves know there are guns inside it's pretty cool. But I still trust my German Shepherds the most. They're usually not thrilled with people who are SUPPOSED to be there...  :-)

I have a friend that that has 'Protected by Brinks Home Security' sign in the yard. They don't have anything but the sign. Thieves are lazy, like water, take the path of least resistence. So far it has worked.

If folks have large homes with 'stuff' that really needs protecting, getting some cheap digital cameras and setting-up a video webserver to visually monitor the house from anywhere on the net is the way to go.  We're doing that now for NY's largest airports.  Only our resolution and range are MUCH better than 'standard'....

Few years ago I saw a true life adventure where a wealthy British fellow had his house and grounds wired with cameras.  He's in France and the alarm goes off on his lap top - he calls the cops in his town and helps direct them to where the perps are hiding.  Cool.  Just like the movies

Charles brings up an interesting point that I think is missing - if you don't 'talk-to' or know your neighbors, how can you expect them to care when your alarm-system goes off?  As people with car alarms have discovered over the years, just because your 'security device' makes a loud, annoying sound doesn't mean those within earshot are going to rush to your aid and help protect your property - they're just going to hate you even-more for creating a public audible disturbance.

In my current line of work, the only time a valid 'intrusion event' is taking place is after a visual assessment can be made that what is happening is NOT a false-alarm.  We use remote digital cameras to put eyes-on-target in these situations, networked and streaming video online, on-demand, covering every intrusion point.  Otherwise, nobody really knows what is being dealt-with or how to respond.  How are your neighbors supposed to respond when your 300dB siren goes off at 3AM?  Maybe they respond how you'd want them to, or maybe they just load-up their high-powered rifle and shoot your speakers full of holes and go back to bed......

That's the only way it works! Our new place is on 20 acres and I can see
nearby neighbors but certainly couldn't talk to them. But I guarantee
they will hear and care about my alarm horns.

In our old neighborhood where the lots were 1/4 acre, a blaring alarm
horn wouldn't get you any help. It would just get you a letter from the
HOA the next morning indicating that both the alarm and the screaming
heard from your house was unnecessary and must be ceased immediately or
risk $25 fine per day.

My problem is I live on a big 1acre lot and so do my next door neighbors
and we can barely see each others house but the good thing is that I
doubt they will be back
