Hi Clyde,

Depends on the operating system and what the password opens up.

The guy who fixes computer problems for me has a program that reveals passwords for a variety of different programs and log-ins.  However, it does not work for access to the computer itself.  For example, it will not reveal the password for a Windows XP profile.  Indeed, the Microsoft website will tell you that if you forget your profile password into Windows XP, you are screwed.  They basically say - sorry, we take security seriously and unfortunately, if you have forgotten your password, you will have to start from scratch, lose everything, reformat the hard drive and load everything anew.  Tough luck if you were not so diligent with backups and have lost all your records, photos and so on.

HOWEVER, THEY ARE WRONG (or maybe they are just being somewhat disingenuous)!  Whatever, my daughter was away in Europe and contacted me asking me to access her computer, find some specific information and forward this in a time-critical situation. But she had forgotten to give me the password and I could not recontact her, so I browsed various hacker sites and found a way in - in fact, I uncovered the actual password, and it was quite a strong password at that.

So, nothing is really 100% safe, I guess.

Cheers,

Grahame

If your computer is password protected with a strong password can anyone get into it without the password?
