Larry you can order a Mac online. Suggest either an iMac with a Core 5 processor or a Mac Pro Laptop. FWIW they have Intel processors and can run all the Wintel stuff as well.

I don't think you can go too far wrong with a Mac Larry.

I have done the same with text messages.  I know some IM services can be set to auto save, like Yahoo's messenger, and MSN.  Not sure how to auto save IM messages on facebook, or if you even can.  Not that I use facebook to communicate often with friends in the fashion, as I find their IM feature, very slow and limited.

I'm not a real computer guy, but I do appreciate well made products, that function as they should.  While my current HP PC seems like a big when it comes to eating up memory and storage space compared to my old Macs, I really can't say it has ever given me any problems function wise.  Having said that, I'm a neat freak, and my next comp will probably be the 27" iMac.  I love the all in one case thinking, and also, the design.  If they introduce a 30", I'm all over it in a heartbeat!! lol

If you don't have an Apple store near you, next time you're in a Starbucks, have a look around for someone using a Mac.  Ask him for a quick rundown of his comp.  Most Mac guys are like Porsche and Ferrari guys, only to happy to share the magic with others who are interested! ;-) hee hee.

Thanks Scott & Ed -
I appreciate the info.  Yep. I am a computer guy I guess.  It sounds like the Mac is what I'll like.

BTW, I wrote earlier about losing a lot of important emails.  I searched for ways to get them back and finally thought I'd give import a try.  I Imported my email from the storage folder and Voila' I got them all back!  Shocked me to be so easy after reading extensively about how many people this has happened to.  All were looking for help and no one suggested Importing the email folder.

now if I could only find a way to get that text message back I closed before saving!  Oops...

Take care --

I always used Mac up until this last comp, which is a PC running Vista.  I know from a number of your posts Larry, you're a computer guy and probably much more knowledgeable than many.  While I've had many older Macs, I'm not in any way a computer guy, which is why I went with Mac in the beginning.

I notice far fewer differences between the new PCs, and the current range of Macs, for the way I use them.  Again, for a real computer type, I'm sure there are lots of differences.

Build quality on a Mac, is more like that on a Benz, while I find most PCs are Chev's.  Nothing wrong with a Chev, but if you appreciate industrial design, and build quality, you will appreciate a Mac.

The Apple site gives a pretty good overview of their product range, along with all the specs and prices.  I understand it's quite easy to load something like XP on a new Mac, but this came after I started to use a PC.  There have always been claims and apps to switch between to two, but I never found them any good in the past.

One thing I have noticed over the years, Mac seem to make much better use of the available memory, and storage space.  I'm sure this holds true for their latest offerings too.  Think of it as a Porsche, where it often looks to have less HP on paper, but it manages to get the job done, often better than those other machines with more HP. ;-)

See if you have an Apple store within range of you, they have their full range on display, and usually have a very knowledgeable and helpful staff.  Avoid the place a few weeks before the kids head back to Uni though, or it will be swarming with people.

Good luck in your search Larry.

Hi Gang -
It's not quite time yet but I'm leaning toward switching to MAC when my
laptop needs replacing.  I've had enough of Microsoft and it's strange ways.

How do  I buy one?  What specs are important?  Is it the same as a PC?  Is
Apple the right one to get?

Any comments would help - I know *nothing* about Mac except what others
have said (largely here) - TIA -
