Hi Clyde,
Old type 1 vw's would blow filters when retrofitted with spin-on external oil filter kits and revved on cold heavy oil; lots used 40 to 60 wt non-Det back then!
Tuner Gene Berg of Ca. never found a fool proof filter brand he claimed.
In the 60s to 80s he probably saw more souped up VWs than anyone else.
That was part of the reason for the metal case filter mesh strainer filters that spin-on in place of the throw away filters. I had no problems on a stroker I ran but I always warmed it up at fast idle about 5 minutes before speeding it up; in SW Texas that thins the oil quickly. Actually I was more worried about letting the engine warm to running dimensions. Of course, these were low rev motors anyway.
Sad that Ferrari is still having the filter failure problem!
Ciao!
Dale
