It depends on the quality of work and how it's used.

 

If you have it professionally done (by the right professionals, and not just anybody) and it isn't run within an inch of its life, it should last.

 

There are a lot of variables that play into this. I've had a few motors that were built up to a very high state of tune, but they lasted a long time since they were maintained and not abused.

 

I have a friend who runs a full Winston Cup motor in a street car. It's tuned to 9000rpm+ redline and about 740-780bhp.

 

It was built in 2000 and he still runs it today . He shifts at 7500rpm and lives with a regular dose of 650bhp and saves the 9000 rpm shifts for track use. Ten years with no issues.

Here is my take on this

Most if not all the time when you modify and engine from stock you effect its reliability  greatly, for what? A few more ponies that you will never use!

Been there, done that on US cars over the years and it is never worth the effort.

Buy it the way it comes from the factory, it will run longer stronger.
