Hi Francis -- That's an interview I'd love to hear! Will it be televised? on the radio? in print? will a transcript be available?

Think it will be available on this side of the Atlantic?

Take care -- LarryT

Hello all

In 5 weeks timeI am hosting an evening when I am interviewing the legendary F1 designer John Barnard. I met him 10 days ago for a preparatory session. Amongst other things he told me how Michael was 1 sec per lap quicker round Fiorano in the 412T than Berger and Alesi. At the time it was all put down to PR but Barnard told me that Michael loved the extra engine braking of the V12 engine over the V8 he had at Benetton as it gave him the pointy effect he liked as he braked late and turned late.. Braking late and letting the back end slide under braking. Berger later said he was unable to drive the Bennetton's set up,for MS to win the championship the year before.Meanwhile Michael told Barnard it would have been so much easier in the Ferrari. In fact the next year, with the Ferrari change to V10 engines, they had to give Michael 7 rather than 6 gears to achieve anywhere near the same braking effect.

What I am trying to put over is that it is not just so easy to adapt a car to the driver's style. Michael came late to Mercedes/Brawn. it will be interesting to see what next year brings.

best
Francis

Don't get me wrong - - Schuey et al are from another planet. Out of ALL the people in the world, these are the guys that have been culled to drive million dollar races. If Sheb Wooley's Flying Purple People Eater could beat Webber - that alien would be their driver.

MUCH respect for any pro-driver. At one time I was the hottest Porsche in a particular class driver. Then I asked about how my times stacked up to the Pro's. Paul Neuman, in a car in my class, was 15 seconds a lap faster. FIFTEEN SECONDS - PER LAP? That put me in perspective. heh heh

MS was always possibly the most diligent about his fitness out of the entire paddock, but a 15 year or more age disadvantage can really make a difference. I think it is likely a combination of the car not being good for him and some team orders at the moment that are resulting in his poor showings. I think MB had a skewed vision of how good their car was going to be, as surely they did not think the McClaren without full factory support would outperform them by the margin they have. Look at Weber, one of the most experience drivers on the grid and he is having the season of his life. Similar when Ferrari was dominant and Irvine the RB were running second to MS as the car was just that good.

ï Good points all, Tom & Stephen -- BUT Schuey was only about ONE- HALF second behind Webber for Belgian GP qualifying. A 1/2 a second!! (how many feet is that at 150 mph? - it aint much) and that dropped him from #1 to #11 - WOWSERS - 9 cars between them for 1/2 a second. This aint an old mans game.

blink- blink = that's a half second.
