Wow - well, can't say as "I know the
feeling." But since I don't have a Cobra - can't attest that.
But when I do see one, I look at the front for the
little cooler with real vintage oil cooler lines, and if Terri isn't around,
I'll walk up to the car and pinch the wheel well. It if feels 1/2" thick -
I rest my case. IF it's real thin and metal - wowsers - also has to smell
of gas.
When living north of San Francisco, the guy I
bought our 1951 Porsche (10539) from, Dick Workman, in 1972, used to race his
427 Cobra at various race ways - if the race was at Sears Point - good
chance he'd drive it to town on Monday. Yep - replete with numbers, open
side pipes, and tech stickers et all. From Marin County, across the
Golden Gate Bridge to his shop in The City on Pine street - Workman
Motor's. In his shop he had two or three complete Cobra skins for his car
- bare metal - waiting for use. Dick was a body man and an aggressive
driver.
Didn't save him when he flipped a high powered ski
boat at Clear Lake. Tough buns, Ace.

As I was walking up to my car in a hotel parking lot, there werea half dozen or so people gathered around. The "expert" in thecrowd said, "It's not real". I opened the door, climbed in, andsaid, "The car may not be real, but the repair costs are."
But I have a hard time imagining the lay public is even aware of the kit car market....I thought only car guys knew of their existence.
