I cant' see Fiat ever letting go of controlling interests in Ferrari.  Ferrari has become a national icon, unlike Lambo and others.  If Fiat/Italy ever sold Ferrari, little old ladies who drive Fiats would turn on the corporate parent company, and start buying Fords in protest. 

While I think small companies have benefited from merging with larger companies, or their customers have anyway, I think those benefits end once too many brands find themselves under one corporate umbrella.
