Hello All,
To me, the move to change the "formula" to 1.6 turbos, seems a bit
ridiculous. If anyone believe it represents economizing, you must not
be thinking that the engine designers/builders are going to produce
uber-euro exquisite masterpieces of engineering that also burn nearly
as much fuel and I think you might be wrong.
The incessant revision of engine specs, is costing more money than any
single set of general engine regulations that could have been adhered
to and evolved over the years. IMHO, The process of
engineering/development of the new designs will be nearly as costly as
any other engine used, + to make the same horsepower, you have to burn
the same amount of fuel, only with the turbo, it is packed in under
additional pressure, rather than with a vacuum provided by scavenging
and the piston drawing it in. The fuel economy of a turbo, comes in to
play, in times when you are not playing with the throttle. That isn't a
lot of time in an F1 car.
As I see it, part of their private thoughts concerning the new reg
might be, that putting turbos on engines acts like a muffler, if you
don't remember. So they put mufflers on the race cars, without
publicly putting mufflers on them. Quite PC.
