Ol' Will sure coulda said it that way too.  But the full quote from the 1915 Zigfields stage show - Midnight Frolic - Will would open with:

"Well, what shall I talk about? I ain't got anything funny to say. All I know is what I read in the papers."

 

Mark Twain had other newspaper quotes too one was "Newspapers aren't there to - - - (can't recall the first part) but to make you mad enough to do something about it."  I guess I just latched on to the latter part because the old paper don't often leave you in the same state of mind you were in before you picked it up.
