I know thereâs a world of difference between a 275 and a Miata but about 5 years ago a acquaintance needed a rebuilt engine for his Miata. He bought a new one from Mazda for $1600 delivered.  Much less expensive than a full rebuild.   The lesson here is to check the options before âassumingâ anything.

It apparently isn't even that expensive.  A couple of years
ago, there was a guy on FChat who purchased an otherwise
nice 275GTB that was missing the engine.  He eventually
found the appropriate type of engine, but it needed some
serious work.  The Classiche dept in Maranello (or is that
Milano?  -jk- :) offered to cast and machine a new one,
and much to his surprise, it was cost competitive to buying
and overhauling an old one.  And, yes, the new one got
matching serial #s.
