Thanks to LS, Erik, Clyde and all others for the great replies! IMO this
list is the only place you'll learn that kind of stuff - the road testers
just give performance quotes - I'd prefer to see road tests done on 10 year
old cars - then we'd learn something! Testing a new car is usually a
foregone conclusion: they tell 0-60 times and a very few other performance
specs and then tell readers the weights and other less than useable info.
Thanks again Guys! I won't even READ an ad for a 456 now! It's a shame though - gorgeous car IMO.

There were a lot of electronic systems on that car that we're not exactly ready for prime time. They had the bugs worked out by the time the 550 showed up. Hello Clyde - Thanks for sharing your thoughts. You mentioned your interest in the 575 – and I like the 550/575 and understand why you’d opt for the newer model. But not mentioned was the 456. Not manly? I like the styling of the 456 as much as the 550/575 andwondered why you’d consider a 575 and not even mention the 456? Is it thatbad or does it just not “light your fire”? They’re both V12s – similar V12’s IIRC. Care to share your comments? Thx LarryT From: clyde romero Sent: Tuesday, November 08, 2011 6:28 PM To: Larry Turner Cc: 'clyde romero' ; The FerrariList Subject: [Ferrari] the 12 cylinder cars MANLY CARS OF NOTE Well I’ve been asked to write my views on the 12 cylinder cars So here it comes, and know I didn’t get all of them but you will get the gist.As some of you know I own a 512 TR with around 93k on it, I drive it not waxit! Most likely the highest mileage one out there and with no major issues. So lets start from the top Early Boxers where the rage for a while with some idiot even in the baby shit rag called FML stating he had the “original plastic “ on the doors asking what $200k for his 1960 throw back!Anyway these cars were nice but VERY LONG IN THE TOOTH and if they break youneed a CNC machine to get it back to running order. The same goes with all those ascot guys you see at the Ferrari meets withthe bottle blond on his arm with the car on the grass at the golf course ofyour choice with the Daytona’s etc. I mean please a carb 12 cyclinder Ferrari is neat to look at but its heavyand has the brakes and steering of a Chevy Vega and at $200k plus give me abreak. And don’t forget the fire extinguisher please!Forget about A/C, and all that shit you here about ( I love the sound of theengine) is just that shit! Because who needs hear metal hitting metal ?Not me, if that’s the case go visit a blacksmith you can hear that all daylong there. The modern 12 cylinders are they way to go, and why do you say. Because theydon’t have to work that hard all the time to get going. They loaf and still perform hence last longer than there brethren the screaming 8 cylinder younger brother 458 etc And they look better doing it too The 412 massacre was just that, and some even had a automatic transmission for GM! Ferraris first try at cross dressing and it failed. The series 1 TR was the first real attempt by Ferrari to make a great GrandTouring 12 cyl that had everything BUT BRAKES! It had the look and the power, but in usual fashion the follow up was better, the 512 TR. It had the brakes that the early TR should have had along with a better transaxle that would not fail. Oh yea did I mention that when Ferrari built the TR they put the old shitbox BOXER tranny it, and the new TR had way more power so you had the clownswho bought the TR new and thought they were in a 5 litter Mustang dragging off stop lights with the wide tires tearing out the rear cases! Bonus.. They fixed tranny issue in the 512TR but not the early serial #’s sooo youdon’t know if you don’t check the gear box and Yes Virgina it’s a $15 K fixminus the labor. In fact I doing one now for a friend on a 92 TR that should have had it fromthe factory. But he bought this car from someone who had the 2nd gear down early in its life which told the story on how it was driven. And yes that a clue guys and girls, if you buy a Ferrari and its had transmission work, you bought an anchor, treat it as such. Bottom line stay away from the TR series 1 it has too many issues in the Tranny and for a little more you get the real deal in the 512 TR. The 512 M is not worth the money period, 12 more HP for wheels and funny head lights. That is it on 512 M The 456 has the same quality control issues as the 348 had. NONE!Leaking windows! Please that went away with Citroen ( for you who don’t knowthat that is, it is not a hair care product, PHIL tell them please!)Anyway 4 four seater modern day Ferrari, WTF were they thinking? I mean mostof the crowd who bought this 12 cylinder shit box with and Automatic transmission( there they go again trying to cross dress, haven’t they learned!) did have 3 friends to go anywhere with them! Have seen this crowd anywhere? Tell me please where they hang out atSTARBUCKS, Wendys, hell they dare not show their faces in public, it is likethey are sex offenders of the prancing horse crowd, I mean really! Any this car was a serious flop, if you have the climate where it doesn’t rain like IRAN, buy one they are cheaper than a 348. I would pay for the video of the guy bringing one in on trade. It would belike bring in a Masseratti Quatrro Port or worse yet ANY ASTON MARTIN in ona trade. Hell a Iraqi T-72 has more trade in value than any of those cars! At least it would start an run! ( PHIL I know you are laughing!!)Phil tell us all what you would say when some poor un suspecting soul wouldbring their treasure slug in for trade? What were the words you would say to them on value? I gotta know! It’s the holidays tell us, because there are those out there in LA LA Land who have these 4 wheel cars and they need to hear it from a GRANDFATHER rather than some guy in a cheap suit and a dime store tie! Enlighten us PHIL you know the words Ok ok I am off message, back to war.So then they made the 612 SCAGAAA a something another, well need I say more!Nice car stealthy looking and fast with all the bells and whistles. But at $220+ large for it new they took a page from the NSX play book on how to sell a car! It didn’t.Once again the guys who bought these things don’t have that many friends to go anywhere with because they drive so bad an scare them! So what the point! At least in the 2 seat world you only scare one other person ( they are notscaring themselves because they KNOW HOW TO DRIVE!, hey what the web site with the wrecked Ferrari’s anyway?) They could take their EX wives with them in the 612 (get them all in one crash) but that’s it! My take on this sled is $100 MAX with the custom luggage thrown in. Ok who’s laughing? This is all true and you know it!!!! Back on message, let move on to the 550 and 575.They got it right with this car. The 550 is the better car if you want eurostyle handling they soften it up for the US crowd with the 575. The story is the same here the 575 is overall the better car in the longrun, it has all the new and improved features that the 550 did not get, seenthis before?(308 2 valve vs 308 4 valve/TR vs 512 TR you get the idea) And what is good about this car is that you don’t have to take out theengine to do the belts, this will be my retirement ride in 3 years,( and no I am not selling the 512TR none of you deserve this car, and yes I said it,only steve Jenkins knows why he owns one and we know who we are so there!SMILE) this car is blinding fast and comfortable and stealthy, if you took of the fender badges you would not know it was a Ferrari crushing you on theROAD! Lots of torque great A/C true Grand Touring car in the 21st century. Only drawback is the F-1 transmission. I don’t care what they say these things are going to cost big bucks when they start getting long in the tooth! But they way you guys drive ( an average 3k miles a year) that will take along time to happen, right?Get a 6speed if you can find one or start a slush fund for your F-1 trannyrebuild/pump/computer take down, because it will happen! They came out with the 575 SuperAmerica and those guys are replacing the flip top like cheap sock made in INDIA! Some idiot opened the top in his garage and you can imagine that mess ! I would pay $65K for 550 and no more than $90k for 575.As for the SA 575 those idiots still think they can get six figures for thecar, they are not even on the planet maybe another universe but there is always Zanax(sic). As for the specially cars F-50 and the like we have all seen the videos of the clowns in these cars, you got to love Ferrari marketing at times. Sell some outrageous car with crazy stupid horse power to anyone and watch them drive into the fountain in MONACO! Image is everything but really! Its like the goons who buy old F-1 cars and crash them a track at PebbleBeach Meet out west. Its sick fun watch the handicapped drive these things!!Why don’t they buy airplanes and remove themselves from the gene pool already! In a lot of ways you feel sorry for them. I know of the guy who owned a F-50who tried to jump start it because the battery went dead( what he wasn’t driving it daily to work! ) and blew out the $15k dash board (its and LCD dash, and he didn’t read the owner’s manual it said don’t jump start the car, but hey I am a DOT comm guy I don’t need no stinking manual) In my opinion Ferrari built these limited edition cars because they knew they could charge ridiculous amounts of money for them and they could usethat big over ride in price to fund the F-1 program. I mean I will admit I have the Ferrari fever as bad as anyone but even if I had Bill Gates money, you don’t buy a F-15 if you just have a commercial pilot’s license! But do I know ! If I missed a 12 cylinder car there was a reason, it wasn’t relevant, no I am just kidding I am writing this enroute to MEX and don’t have access to the internet. Gotta fly the plane an talk on the radios and all!Oh one more thing the main issue with the 512 TR is the starter, put the newversion on it and the starter relay package and you will have no issues. Get a can of R-12 off ebay as well so you don’t have to convert the a/csystem to R-134 which no matter what they tell you sucks unless the car wasdesigned for it. The conversions never work well.By the way does the 550/575 have R-134 I don’t know but I think it does andwhat year was the change over anyway? That it from the CLYDEster All the best guys. Lets try to meet somewhere in 2012 anywhere maybe Cape Cod? HMM Clyde Romero just the right amount of wrong!
