Carpenter did all sorts of early Ferrari race cars for the street.  Most notably was a replicar P4.  For all I know, it was built on a 1955 Buick Super frame but it looked good – at least in pictures.

Nicely stated Grahame.

I think the original intentions were good, but the better path IMO is to build out a monster BB.

I think we all agree that the 288GTO is a beatiful car with beautiful proportions, and I agree that this thing looks a bit ugly - but if you don't think of it as a 288GTO knock-off, it then stands on its own as a bit of a beast in my opinion.

Actually, it is impossible to create a body kit for a 308GTB that is an exact replica of the 288GTO and here is why. ALL of the 288GTO's dimensions are larger than the 308GTB with the exception of height, which is the same. Otherwise, the 288GTO is about 4.4" longer in the wheelbase, and about 4" wider in both front and rear track. Body length, it is about 2.5" longer but it is much wider in the body, fully 7.5" wider.  These proportions cannot be exactly replicated in a new body dropped over a 308 frame unless you actually lengthen the chassis and also widen the wheelbase.

Cheers,

Grahame

Ugly IMO and doesn't look like a 288GTO.   >From the description it read like the body was supposed to be an exact replica.

Wow, the car seems such a beast. And such interesting history... Enzo would have loved it! And judging by the paint chips and/or bugs in the shots of the oil coolers, the car has seen some action. Anybody actually seen it in full song? If it was nearby I'd definitely want to look at it and maybe even buy it. But sadly it's about 10,000 km from home!

That is correct.  The car was sold at auction in 2001 according to Sheehan's report.

I saw the car in person here in Seattle in 2003 when John Goodman (local vintage racer/collector) owned

it.

Part of the ad is below:

The original conversion was commissioned by Mel Spillman and executed by Jim Carpenter of Arizona, who did many other 288 GTO conversions in the late 80s as well. It is estimated that Spillman spent about $400,000 on the car. The car was sold by the State of Texas to Miles Irish who spent about $60,000 with Carobu engineering to fit the Motec dash, engine management system and wiring, and to rebuild the engine, gearbox and brakes. The car was subsequently sold to John Goodman of Seattle who spent over $40,000 on race preparation, carbon fiber air snorkels, oil coolers and a thorough going–over (2002–2004) by Walter Gerber, former head of Porsche’s racing efforts with the Porsche Indy car team and the IMSA 930, 956 and 962 race efforts. The result is a car with dyno sheets showing more power than an F40 with the F40LM turbo upgrade.

Car was likely seized, and is now in the 'public domain' again.  Sheehan isn't shilling it for Spellman, who is already out of prison if you bothered to read the Wiki article....

And Mike Sheehan is selling it?? Such a small world, Oh what a wicked web we weave, when once we mean to deceive.

No... but, it's a car that the notorious MEL SPELLMAN had modified to race.

He stole/spent the money from dead people's estates on a bunch Ferraris.

I haven't read all the blurb in that ad.  I'll assume it reflects sincere pride in this -- let's call it unique -- '81 308.

As an "outlaw" or hot rod, it's an interesting looking machine, I have to say, not too shabby as a DIY effort.

If I put on my dreamer's cap for a minute, imagine this car has been constructed to the same chassis dimensions and stiffness, the same suspension geometry and the same weight distribution as the GTO it -- let's say it "resembles."  Setting aside all the prudent concerns of safety (not wanting that engine to implode a few inches from my brain and my balls) or reliability (not wanting it to crack open at a suspension pick-up point while over 130 mph on a track somewhere) and dream a little about just driving it (and not necessarily letting anyone see you driving it ... : )  I think it could be a helluva rocket ride.  Might even give a brief glimpse into the experience of the 288.  Anything's possible.

Without making an issue of where this car is being advertised, what do you guys think:

http://www.ferraris-online.com/pages/carintro.php?reqcardir=FE-288GTO-34555#P009a

Looks cool, performs well I'm sure, sure it sounds pretty nice.........just an issue of "kosherness". The interior is "interesting"...

Obviously this isn't a Fiero 308, so a discussion I think is legit.

That rear shot is Violence with a capital V!!
