I remember drops of gas falling off through the muffler after turning off the engine. THAT got my attention. The reason I drove so long is I always empty the gas tank the first time I drive the car after winter. So I kept driving even though I couldn't go more than 100km/h.

Hmmmm ? ran for 1.5 hours on four cylinders?  Does your car or did your car have cats?  Could be that just before the total failure of the crank sensor lots of unburned fuel went down the pipe and melted the cat ? either partially or totally.

I had a huge problem with my 1981 308 GTSi. Turns out the crank sensor was broken. I was running on 4 cylinders driving for about 1h30. They don't make that part anymore. My mechanic found me a good replacement. All is well.

But the car is not sounding as beautiful as it once did. Sound is not as smooth as it used to be.  Seems I have a need for a new exhaust/muffler system. Too many tiny holes all around the old system. Says my mechanic.

Any tips as to where I can get a new system (exhaust/muffler) at a good price: meaning not unlimited budget.

Thank you!
