Exhaust leaks will cause backfiring and popping noise.

Could be, a poorly designed exhaust could be worse than a banana up the tail pipe...

I forgot to mention. I changed the muffler last week. It's a used one (original #114683), and the guy had a rough time putting it on because the one I had, had no CATS on. He had to fabricate about 4 'elbows' and new brackets to make everything fit. It looks strange from underneath. That can't be part of my problem, can it?

1981 308 GTSi: O.k. I found a new connector for the plug wire to the plug extender.

1- Test drive today: Now (it was there yesterday) I get this very nice bling sound (or like someone playing with a small chain at all times). A friend of mine mentioned it could be "harmonic balance wheel" that is making that sound. Any thoughts ?

2- Plus, it does not burned  gas very nicely when cold and then when the water gets around 190 degrees, small backfires happen on occasions. I changed the plugs NGK bpr7es yesterday. Distributor caps were cleaned last may by my mechanic. When I put my hand behind the exhaust tips on driver's side, it feels smooth. But, the exhaust on the passenger's side feels heavy, rough.
The plug wires are 10 years old (changed in 2002). I think they are due. Any other thoughts ?

This is frustrating, I've had backfire problems all summer last year.

Thanks in advance!
