>> Clyde notes - When you are hungry you do things you would not normally do.  The true test is when the economy turns better will they still do this

Funny you should mention that Clyde – Picture this 1990 – Ford was doing well and they built a large truck engine that was also used in motor homes.  A motor home company (maker?) bought a lot of chassis and engines.  Built their motor homes with the big Ford engine.  Problem with the Ford engine – because of a bad crankshaft design the rear main seal failed.  After xxx miles it would puke all the engine oil out the RMS.

An older couple bought one of the new motor home and right on queue at the xxx mileage, the engine pukes its oil.  Oppps said the motor home maker when the complainant brought his motor home in.  They replaced the engine under warranty with a crate motor they had in stock.  Now that was important – “had in stock.”  Now motor homes don’t get driven a lot and a few years later – the sister #2 motor from the same batch as before – pukes its guts out a 1,000 miles from home.

Ford, still doing quite well, would NOT stand behind that motor.  Regional service manager said they had already replaced one motor & they were NOT going to replace it with a third one.

When it was pointed out that engine # two, taken from motor home stock room, was only a few serial numbers off engine # one and obviously from the same batch with the same bad crankshaft design – Ford said in their most eloquent Dearbornese – FY.  [editors note – we think that means Forget You]

Law suit – ensues, meanwhile husband dies, wife goes bonkers, heirs are faced with the mess and punt.  Ford won that one.  Subsequently the economy goes sour and Ford can’t do enough to help anyone.

Alas
