Would be useful to know more specifically where on the "Jersey coastline" -- that certainly covers a lot of territory.

No doubt, but I was only commenting on here in VA.  I do feel bad for those folks, but as someone else (Fellippe??) pointed out, a storm like that had never been seen in anyone's lifetime in those parts, so it must have been difficult to imagine or prepare for.  But here in Central VA, it was little more than a normal rainy, windy day.
