I was in the middle of a 30K service when I thought it a good idea to troubleshoot a chronic overheating problem.....we found my head gasket was bleeding exhaust gasses into my coolant, and the years of overheating had ruined: a piston, several cylinder liners, the crank, and the flywheel.  That 'gold coating' inside the motor is overcooked oil.  Someone had used an entire tube of RTV Sealant to stop the Cam seals from leaking, and managed to get large amounts of it INSIDE the engine block coolant passages.  We also found one of the coolant manifold passages atop the head was completely blocked and no coolant was flowing into the top of cylinders 7 and 8.....my car had sat for 12 years, there was a LOT of corrosion/scale inside the motor from this that we blasted out.  You cannot leave fluid inside an aluminum drivetrain and just 'walk away'.....you HAVE to flush it every year.  The motor turned-out to be a grenade - it ran great, but....

Oh, and we dug-up my Compression/Leakdown numbers from my PPI and my mechanic says - "you bought this car why?"  All of my valves were scored from the PO's mechanic doing a hack-job at a valve adjustment, many of them (well, ALL) had nicks/grooves scratched into them.....so we re-did the heads with all-new valves, guides, shims, etc.  EVERY hose in the car was replaced, I was a guinea pig for Dave Helms' new line of Ferrari hoses - the only hose of his we didn't use was the hoses that traverse the body-tunnels between the engine and the dual-heater/master cylinder arrangement under the front bonnet - we used Gates green stripe and a special steel-braided line for the vaccuum from Newco.  All A/C lines were replaced by Retro-Air lines...the E-Brake that never worked was completely replaced....a bunch of other stuff...it kinda turned into a mini-restoration.

Thanks for sharing the pics Michael.

The work looks very nice indeed, I hope it brings you many years of pleasure.  Can I ask why the engine needed to be rebuilt?

Regards,

Carl.

The first-snow has hit Greater New England - at least six inches here, looks like its time to put the car to bed.  I hadn't finished breaking the new engine in yet, but that will have to wait until Spring - the salt trucks are 'out' tonight.  We're done.

Anywho, here are the shots of the work started back in 2009.  Some shots have some supporting info, all were taken by David Feinberg of Ferrari Service of Bedford.  His handiwork - I just cleaned, powdercoated, painted, and plated damn-near everything, and did the engine-bay and radiator/coolant-hose work up-front.  Everything else - David.

Cheers,
