Hey Gary – I remember 12 or so years ago when this List WAS a general chat room, full of nasty and belittling remarks and questions of a person’s linage coming from a dirty test tube.  WOWSERS – THOSE were the daze (sic).  Quite a bit more civil and therefore much more informative.  But I’m with you on the ‘general chat” aspect.  However (there always seems to be one of those) this group of folks really represents a collection of pretty sharp bunch brain cells.  So an occasional question other than Ferrari’s is   I enjoy lurking on a general question and have learned quite a bit.  Sometimes grist for the mill or fodder for the cannon – but interesting nevertheless.

Onward and Merry Christmas

I agree with the debate on the issue.

I just hope we don't turn our Ferrari sharing into a general chat room.

Gentlemen this has been a great debate it was civil and very informative
from my point of view It truly shows the diversity of this list and this
country I might add I realize I got the juices flowing in some of you and
that's a good thing!

Happy holidays to all and lets use the list not only to learn about our
wonderful cars and love for them But also to express our thoughts as
gentlemen about issues that effect us all!

ASSAULT RIFLE
By U.S. Army definition, a selective-fire rifle chambered for a cartridge

of

intermediate power. If applied to any semi-automatic firearm regardless of
its cosmetic similarity to a true assault rifle, the term is incorrect.
ASSAULT WEAPON
Any weapon used in an assault (see WEAPON).
WEAPON
Webster defines it as "an instrument of offensive or defensive combat."

Thus

an automobile, baseball bat, bottle, chair, firearm, fist, pen knife or
shovel is a "weapon," if so used.

You suggest that we use the NRA definition of assault weapon, which is

O.K.

with me.

And so to your question: Who on the list still thinks we need assault
weapons? If we use the NRA definition of Assault Weapon, then by

definition,

a Ferrari could be considered an assault weapon, if it is used as an
instrument of offensive or defensive combat. Then the question could be
changed to: Who on the list still thinks we need Ferraris? Conversely, if

a

civilized AR-15 is used for target shooting, and not as an instrument of
offensive or defensive combat, then by definition, it must NOT be an

assault

weapon.

To me, the issue is not about need.....it is about rights.....it is about
political power and therefore votes.....it is about increasing government
control......and......it is about loss of individual liberty.

An armed law-abiding person is a CITIZEN! A disarmed law-abiding person is

Phil,

I think the simple answer to your question is that the issue of guns and gun violence has become politicized. When that happens, it seems that it is no longer possible to see the issue clearly.

You and I, being law abiding citizens and without a federal license, could not walk into a gun store, or a gun show, and buy a weapon capable of full automatic fire. The bad guys get illegal full auto weapons without federal license (of course) through clandestine sales from corrupt agents. Many of the full auto weapons used by Mexican narco-terrorists, for example, came from the Mexican armed forces. The “Fast and Furious” weapons were semi-automatic. Any knowledgeable gunsmith can modify the sears of semi-auto weapons and convert them to full auto relatively easy. Anybody with a CNC machine can illegally fabricate full auto sears.  Illegally manufactured full auto sears are also  available in the underworld market. Legally manufactured sears are available on the internet. It is even easier than that…..

http://www.angelfire.com/anime5/unclero/books/AK47_Full_Auto_Conversion_for_Dummies.pdf

So, yeah, the bad guys continue to sell to bad guy buyers and nothing seems to be done about it……..but politics needs to fix blame……so the legitimate gun stores and gun shows bear the brunt. It is not about the gun, it is about the user…..but that’s politics for you.

Maybe the problem could be better controlled when we realize that much of the problem in obtaining any deadly weapon is that not only do  "the bad guys seem to have few problems obtaining them." BUT, the bad guys continue to sell them, how do we start to control that element rather than place the mantle of blame on all intelligent gun owners?

What's the definition of an "assault weapon?"  I can never get anyone to tell me ... is it how it looks?  The length of the barrel?  How many rounds of ammo the magazine holds?  Is it a full auto or semi-auto weapon?  I can't really answer unless I know what we are talking about.
