The disparity between diehard enthusiast and "average sports-car driver" has been explained well here.

Thanks Michael !

So what this means is that I'll be shopping for a carbed V12 Ferrari...or if pressed to go for something new,  a Viper, Vette or RS spec Porsche with all interior and exhaust thrown into a dumpster.

That's great, but if I'm stoplight-racing you for bragging rights, and I'm some rich, gold-chain-wearing Guido who has spent more time making the money to buy that fancy car than I have learning how to drive it, I want a tranny that can shift gears in milliseconds while controlling wheel-spin while I focus on keeping the front wheels pointed in the right direction.

We forget the fact that your average sports-car driver is a successful workaholic with more money than sense or driving talent, and the Carmakers have been exploiting this person in their Horsepower War by selling them cars that their driving skills cannot safely pilot.  All those nanny-computers and controls?  Those are to keep the moron-drivers alive and prevent them from killing themselves in their 500 HP status symbols.  You don't win too much repeat-business if your clients are all dead.

BTW, Deep, you are NOT the normal sports-car driver - God bless you.

What am I falling for?

I had an erection when the rear wheels lit up at 60mph. I laughed, then cried when I smacked a perfect heel toe downshift.

I tried that in a 430 and 53 circuit boards and electric motors spooled up, then the windshield wiper stalk extended 10 inches and slapped my groin.

Where's the marketing hype in the actual execution?

Real drivers are getting fucked by the current crop of "enthusiast cars".

I've never seen myself in a Vette, but how long until we have no choice but to accept reality?

Sad reality...

LS

Don't fall for that bit of marketing hype.  The car P&M field for LeMans is a far cry from the car you buy at the Chevy dealer....    Oh sure, it looks like a vette, but no...  This is silhouette racing.

Rick

Instead, you can't shift gears yourself in a Ferrari, Porsche has 3 cars that look like minivans,  the Vette allows the driver to actually control the car and keeps winning Le Mans?

Well, that's from 2010, so it's already a five year old platform he's selling.
I have to agree with your other points.  Once you have a road car that has won Le Mans in its homologated format and sports the technology without the "nannies" -- I think all the "driver's" marques should have the necessary "defeat" switches to turn off all the electronics (even ABS, if I really want the fun of flat-spotting tires on the track ...)

I wish Porsche and Ferrari would offer an option to go to the factory and participate hands on in building the engine going into the car I order!

I dont really care for Vettes but driving them sure is fun...apparently some professionals share the same opinion?
