Rick, isn't engine limitation by displacement an old, archaic formula?

It should be by mass.

Forced induction and multiple cams are backwards technology from the 1970s and 80s only because of a silly displacement regulation and

Have the motor be able to fit into a physical box...a really small one and see where the *real* engineering comes in.

See, I'm of the opposite ilk...

I could care less about a driver's series.... They are just wetware...  a necessary evil.  If you like that sort of thing, watch F2 or Indy cars... Hell, track and field events.  I'm about an all out technological assault on the racetrack.  My heroes are the Ross Brawns and Ken Tyrrells of the work, guess you can add Adrian Newey to the list too.  But, couple a great car with a great driver and I think the results are magical.   I have no issue with dominance.   I'm all for advancing the cause of "man and machine".  Sink or swim.

 

Pit computers are fine, but I'm in favor of going back to 2 way communication (Coulthard's oiling issue).  I'm all for going back to wheelbase, displacement and weight as the ONLY regs, then let the bright boys have at it.   I like active suspension and traction control.  I heralded Jim Hall's movable wing!!  I liked the aspect of refueling strategies (again Ross was a master).  I liked overcooked qualifying engines.  As an engineer I cherished the concept of a motor strung so tight it blew 5 feet past the finish line.  Thats RACING.  F1 today is over-regulated and like so many other things... dumbed down for the masses.

 

Sadly, the true pinnacle of man and machine today is LeMans.   And I say that (cLyDe) only because aerospace technology takes longer to make it into the air than racing technology takes to make it to the track.   And even LeMans is over regulated in my eyes.

 

And the "green" will come with innovation, development and maturation.  Forcing it is stupid and shortsighted on the FIA's part.  But I've always thought Charlie was douche.  There can't be any real competition when everyone's hands are tied with inane regulation.

NASCAR fans are used to parades interrupted by halacious cars-in-the-air accidents where, most of the time, the driver hops out and gives the finger on the next lap to the perp who nurfed him and if the TV cameras are lucky â ho boy â an after race fight. 

 

I predict â I predict for F1?  First turn wins it.  Then THE parade.

 

You want competition?  YOU want COMPETIOIN?  WE CANâT GET COMPETITION.

 

As said before â do away with the pit computers.  Period. 

 

Put the race back in the cockpit â to do otherwise turns skilled drivers into Aibo Sony robots.

 

Just my thots â I could be wrong.  Harrumph

Hey Friends,

 

What are your thoughts regarding the 2014 F1 season? Lots of rules changes. Some are okay, some are stupid. I'm okay with the okay ones. Not fond of the stupid ones.

 

Emphasis has changed from agressive driving to conservative driving, with the engineers calling the shots. Perhaps I'm wrong. I hope so. But when races are to be won by tire and fuel management rather than agressive overtaking, I wonder how exciting a race can be. Perhaps timid overtaking will be the norm because everyone is over their lap's fuel allotment. 

 

Here's a thought: For those of us who have followed F1 for decades, we know the circus is a complex interplay of team strategy and driver skill. With the emphasis shifting to pit wall from cockpit, the balance seems to be shifting in favor of strategy (over cockpit). For us seasoned fans (read: old farts) that may be okay, because we follow both race strategy and cockpit testicles magnitude. But what about the new fan, the guy fresh from NASCAR or WRC, who just tuned in? Is he going to understand lifting and allowing a pass because the driver used too much fuel on the previous lap? And unlike tires 'going off', how is the driver going to know if he's been using too much fuel by driving competitively? A: advice from the pit wall. 

 

Yes, I know its a team sport and I know I'm going to enjoy it. In fact, I may enjoy it just a little bit more this year, but the new viewer may not. It is after all, 'entertainment', not 'sport'.

 

Why might I enjoy this season more? Because I follow F1 for the cars and the technology. I really don't care about the drivers' championship. They're just the meaty part of the package. I just want the drivers to function and get 100% out of the machine. And when I write 'technology' I mean technology that makes the cars quicker, not 'greener'. A green F1 car is an oxymoron.  Screw green. If they really wanted green they should convert their transporters to electric (and burn coal like other electric cars). Don't get me wrong, I think electric cars are cool because they're forward-looking technology, not because they're green. They're not green. They just push the emissions out of public view. I'm okay with that but the average human is pretty uninformed - and that implues that half the population is dumber than that.

 

So yes, I am really ready for the season to begin. I love seeing Williams performing well. They were overdue. Nice to see our favorite red cars doing well too. It will be an uphill challenge against the mighty Mercedes technical empire, but with Ferrari's win-at-all-costs attitude, they should be winning races this season. We shall see - and that's what I'm waithing for!
