I agree with you Lash. I also drive my old cars. Our newest vehicle is a
97 tahoe with 180K, our family car and my wife's work car (60 mi/d RT)
has 230K without opening the engine, my 911 has 100k + (engine never
apart) and I drive it every time i need to go somewhere (unless they put
salt on the roads) and a 78 with 330K engine rebuild at 160K) which I
drive when I don't want to use the 911 and lastly a 66 MGB with 350K and
2 engine rebuilds - it was my daily driver from 1971 to 1991 when i was
averaging 18K/yr.

IMO older cars have more robust parts than newer ones. i'll grant newer
cars are more refined. It's hard for me to speak to the life of newer
cars since I haven't put any through the wringer.. ;-)

Clyde, agree with some of your points. But you haven't owned an old
car in .....30 yrs?

I have three of them now...all carbed and the newest is 1987.

I cannot, for the life of me, figure out what you did to them to make
them break, catch fire, blow up, fail, etc.

I agree the technology has progressed by leaps and bounds since then.
Some of the new technology your praise is applicable in the old cars.
You may not know this because you haven't had an old car in a long time.

5lb lightweight batteries, MSD ignition, modern tire compounds,
urethane bushings, modern gasket material, carbon brake pads, etc.

I'd be willing to bet that the battery, tire compounds and brake pads
on my '66 are more advanced than your 512TR.

Owning an old car today is nothing like owning one back in the 70s or
even 80s.

Listen I am a A&P mechanic and an airline pilot (yea I know big deal)
and I have been around things mechanical since 1965 when I started
working on airplanes at Aviation HS when I was 15.
I also flew century series fighters RF-101 and the follow ups F-4 and
F-15âs so I have seen a broad spectrum of mechanical issues across
both fields.
And I will match my mechanical skills and knowledge base with anyone.
So that gives me just a little credence when it comes to things
mechanical ,maybe.
Given that old cars like old airplanes did not have the quality
control when it comes to metals and manufacturing process that really
started around the late 80âs you will eventually experience a
catastrophic failure of a primary component that will end your day,
and maybe your life.
Find me any 60âs car domestic or foreign that has anywhere close to
what my 512 TR has on it (98k) without a major rebuild, it doesnât exist!
Yea Lash sorry buddy but the cars made back then were shit boxes in
pretty packages.
It is what it is, and yes they caught fire a lot too!
Now there are some on this list that are as old as me that can
remember their dads had cars with 3 speeds on the column and the
starter switch on the floor.
Ask them if donât believe me, I even remember 6 volt cars before they
went to 12 volt systems.
Oils and bearings, coolants switches and the like did not have staying
power that we now enjoy in your basic Honda Fit.
Donât even mention starters, batteries, brakes, hoses, belts and tires!
So you buy an old car knowing that it will break hard one day, with no
parts available.
So buy a CNC machine ( thatâs computerized numerically controlled for
the uniformed) and learn how to make stuff.
For me, give me great A/C and greater reliability, with OBD 2 or 3 on it.
Gotta go fly.

In defeat you need it!
