SCOTTSDALE SEES MORE RECORDS -NO END IN SIGHT?

REPORT FROM AUCTION EXPERT RICK CAREY

There seems to be no lack of money to chase the best Ferraris,
those with good provenance and low build numbers. But is it
reaching a point where the best cars are hard to come by?

After the Ferrari-based
excitement of Monterey and its
eye-opening sale by RM of the
275 GTB/4 NART Spyder, sin
10709, for $27.5 million, the
January auctions in "Scottsdale"
Arizona, seemed to offer little
comparable excitement.

To jump to that conclusion
would be a mistake, but amid
the clutter and market noise following
Monterey, it took some
introspection, and dramatic transactions
engineered by several of
the Scottsdale auction companies,
to recognize it.

MERCATO

PARIS SEES A POSSIBLE PAUSE

The milestone Scottsdale
ansactions were notable:

• RM's sale of 250 GT LWB
California Spyder, si n 1055 GT,
!or $8.8 million, the top price
ever at the Scottsdale auctions;
• Gooding's unexpected result
for 250 GT Cabriolet Series I,
sin 0791 GT, for $6,160,000.
Largely original cars continued
to attract attention bordering
on irrational:

• Three unrestored 328sRM's
328 GTS sin 62781 , for
$132,500 (9,079 miles), BarrettJackson's
328 GTS, sin 8293 2,
(10,883 miles) for $64,900 and
Bonhams' 328 GTB, si n 78714,
(7, 133 miles) for $82,500;
• Bonhams' 308 GTB vetroresina,
si n 19579 (13,866 miles)
for $114,400; and,
• Gooding 's fire damaged,
filthy 330 GTS, si n 9343, for
$2,062,500.
Auction lightning can still
strike, apparently, and nowhere
was it more evident than w ith
Barrett-Jackson's sale of 1998
F300 Formula One, si n 183,

a T-car with no race history.
It was sold by RM in London
in 2012 for $644,440, then offered
in November at the Motostalgia
Auction in Austin, Texas
during USGP weekend with a
reported high bid of $900,000.
It brought $1.7 million hammer,
$1,870,000 with commission at
Scottsdale, a price that defies
comprehension.

Barrett-Jackson's sale of the
"Gas Monkey Garage" rebuilt
F40, sin 87589, for $742,500
is mentioned without further
comment.

The five main Arizona auctions
-Bonhams, RM, Gooding,
Barrett-Jackson and Russo and
Steele -saw a grand total of
$252,726,909 change hands
for 1,889 cars sold out of 2,151
offered. The aggregate 87.9%
sale rate was heavily influenced
by Barrett-Jackson, which sold
all but four of the 1,403 lots offered.
Overall, the five auctions
were up 11.7% from 2013, and
38.5% from 2012.

Individual auctions' perform

ance varied widely from last
year, notably Bonhams with
$23.5 million in sales, up 74.4%
from 2013, Russo and Steele
with $23.3 million, up 44.9%
from last year and RM with
$45.6 million in two days, up

25.1 % from last year's one-day
sale. Barrett-Jackson was up a
creditable 8.2% to $111 million.
With $49.4 million, the week's
second-highest auction total,
Gooding slipped 14.4% from last
year's rather breathtaking $57.7
million.
Ferraris, as usual, made up
much of the auctions' totals with
51 of 54 sold (94.4%) for
$50,436,320, an even 20% of
the week, an increase in the Ferrari
concentration of four points
from last year's $36.1 million and
16% of the aggregate transactions.
Fourteen Ferraris brought
hammer prices of $1 million or
more, 42.4% of the 33 million
dollar lots in Scottsdale this year.
Their values [were thus] totaled
$40,975,000, 50.4% of the million
dollar cars ' $81.2 million

total, and once again capturing

the week's top sale w ith RM's
California Spyder, sin 1055 GT,
at $8.8 million.

The market's appetite for million
dollar cars shows no sign of
slackening but, as mentioned
earlier, there is a fascination with
unrestored, and particularly dilapidated
barn finds, cars that
are capturing serious money. The
dreaded phrase, "You can't pay
too much, only too soon" is turning
up more and more to explain
(justify?) transaction results that
challenge credibility. It would not
be unreasonable to hypothesize
that this attitude is the way bubbles
are blown up.

But even Ferrari prices pale
in comparison with the $19 billion
Facebook paid for revenueless
messaging application
Whatsapp, named after an old
Budweiser ad's tag line. We
might legitimately ask the same
guestion, "Whatsup?" about the
collector car market's continuing
strength .

REPORT FROM YOUR STAFF

Big Ferraris do well, but plain
vanilla ones continue to struggle.
What's ahead?

Paris was a mixed bag,
which, if nothing else, showed
that great cars were becoming
hard to come by for the auction
houses. There were some blockbusters
here, but they were surrounded
by definite filler, Ferraris
that were built in great numbers
and which will take years to appreciate.
Many barely made reserve
and traded at the low end
of their historic range. But the
$3.6m for the 166 Oblin was
expected, and the $3.1 m for the
4-cam was not unexpected. But
the big surprises were the $.5 for
a PF Coupe, $.35 for a Boxer,
$.45 for a GTE 2+2, and $.25
for a 365 GT 2+2. Formula One
Ferraris are making a comeback
in the auction market, but they
are a tough sell, given the lack
of parts and the continual upkeep.
