I only watch road course racing and Indy, V8 Supercars and GT racing (LM, etc.) usually provide the real racing entertainment that F1 typically lacks.
These series and vintage races (Monterey, Goodwood, etc.) tick all the boxes. F1 is more of a spectacle.
I don't watch or follow NASCAR. However, their Sonoma and Watkins Glen races can be very, very interesting to watch.
The drivers are excellent and the cars are well prepared despite their image to the uninitiated.
NASCAR's onboard footage really makes you appreciate the very impressive engines and what it takes to physically hustle one of those cars around a road course.

This is why I think these days MotoGP,
Super Bike, etc. have surpassed F1 for enthusiast viewing -- you cannot overengineer a motorcycle, and the rider in a bike plays yet a bigger role than a driver in a car.
Of course for true A-list entertainment, F1 is king and will always be. It must be awesome to attend Monaco GP, and I'd imagine out of this world to be a top 5 driver in it!!!
But I figure that's not what many on here care about.

It's what you get with a "driver's series". All the same cars, a couple different motors, and ooooooh different paint schemes. A handful of F1 cast offs and a handful of F1 never-weres. This is the drivers series SOOOOOOOO many people clamor for. Ding dongs trying to show off. I'll admit I'm a disappointed F1 fan. For the all out technology race car I get but once a year to watch LeMans. <sigh>RickI am watch the race in Houston and they are hitting each other like cheap go kart drivers! In victory you deserve ChampagneIn defeat you need it!<image001.gif>

Subject: Re: [Ferrari] IndyCarz, no spoilerYes. I think the IndyCars are really techno-sweet looking...and F1 cars have grown ugly, through no fault of their makers. They have to follow the restrictive formula and make the most of the limitations. That means standardised diffusers, narrow rear wings and limited front wings, turned into multi-layer tea trays. And while smaller engine displacement is interesting, the real benefit of small displacement turbo engines is high engine speed - which is prohibited.I watched my first IndyCar race yesterday (since I live in Houston) and I may watch my second today. The racing was good and I think I need to look more into those cars. Yes, both series are entertainment industries. Their organizers seek to equalize the field so that the championships will be decided on the last lap of the last race of the season - but that's just good business. We can't avoid that. However, I am disillusioned by the F1 formula that prohibits modern technology like ABS and traction control on the cars. And at the same time that formula minimizes aerodynamics - a science that is responsible for substantial mileage increases on road-going cars. But none of that inhibits the FIA from green-washing us with immensely complex ERS systems with rear brake-by-wire, while DRS (movable aerodynamics which has otherwise been banned for decades) tries to encourage overtaking. I just wish they would go one way or the other: high tech or low tech, not mixed tech. And yea, I know IndyCar (and NASCAR, which I don't follow) standardize their formulas as well. After all, they are entertainment businesses too. I guess I'm just disappointed by the direction F1 has turned. Perhaps I'm just old.So, will I continue to follow F1? Absolutely! Have done so for 17 years now, both as a spectator/fan and as an F1 pit marshal. But I must admit, my real interest is and has always been the cars, not the championships - and certainly not the drivers. I have just discovered another series to consider - because the cars are pretty, not mixed tech tea trays with wheels.Your mileage may vary...obviously.-rick-------- Original message --------From: Rick MoseleyDate:06/29/2014 4:14 AM (GMT-06:00)To: Rick LindsayCc: The FerrariListSubject: Re: [Ferrari] IndyCarz, no spoilerWTF?? The IndyCars are as beautiful as the F1 cars are a joy to listen to.
