The new super cars have double what we thought was a ot of HP back in the 60s...  Adding an electric motor with torque from the get-go really changes the game!

For instance, back in 1966 a Mustang with a 427 was hot stuff (still is) but now there are cars with gas and electric motors boasting 1000hp!  The batteries and motor adds weight but the HP offsets it.

The new LS series motors are some 150lbs lighter,

and produce typically 50% more power than the old

motors.  Like up to 505hp naturally aspirated in street

legal trim.  The aluminum block is deep skirted, with the

sides of the block extending below the crankshaft.

Bearing caps are full width, with 4 bolts from the bottom,

and 2 bolts coming in from the sides of the block.

Heads are vastly improved, and unlike the old SBC,

the ports are identical and evenly spaced.  Port size

is some 50% larger, going in a spiral past the valve

stem.  The LS heads more resemble big block heads

in this regard.  Chamber design allows for more

compression (up to 11.5:1) and still using pump gas.

In short, absolutely no resemblance to the old motor.

Not a single part interchanges including basic hardware,

as the new motor is all metric, the old motor not.

For hot rod use, the 6.2L 430hp crate motor is very

popular.

High power Lotus 7 clones are being done ---  with

Corvette V8s.  They are called a Stalker.

The Corvette V8 is very light compared to other

V8s at about 400lbs.  That's only about 100lbs heavier

than the Dino V6.  It's about the same or lighter than

many 6 cylinder engines - especially inline 6 cyl.

 

The Stalker was originally designed around a supercharged 

Buick V6, but few use that option anymore after finding out

that the Corvette V8 weighs less.

I see these Caterhams.....such cool cars, typical curb weight around 1000-1300 lbs, but always with a motorcycle motor or a small 4 cylinder turbo. That's fine in itself, and probably what I'd have anyways.

 

But what if one dropped a Dino 206/246 motor in there? How cool would that be? 160-200 hp would be great so long as it didn't weigh a whole lot. I can't imagine a Dino powered Caterham weighing more than 1500 lbs.

 

I know what you're thinking.....there are other motors that make more sense in terms of weight, power, reliability. Of course....but this is an F motor we're talking about! The most important part of a Ferrari. :)

 

The firing order of the Dino V6 is similar to the V12.....they sound like mini V12s, no? hehe. 

 

Originally the idea came from seeing Elises with the plebian Celica motor.....and I remembered that the Dino motor went into the lighter Stratos for nice results. Caterhams weighing about 1000 lbs less than an Elise probably makes even more sense.

 

Just have to figure out what transmission to put in, and make that work. Not sure if the mid to front engine deal would be an issue. Maybe go all out and get that Dino transmission in there, with the gated shifter too!

 

And as expensive as Dinos are these days to buy as a whole car, I can't imagine the crate motor being any more expensive than it was a few years ago.

 

Of course once you are braced and accepting of this idea, the next level is to source an NOS 166 Mille Miglia V12, and do the same thing. LOL.

 

I've limited the displacement to around 2.5 liters, but if you feel we can go bigger and still be ok I'm fine with it. :)

 

All of this has to be better than a V12 in a Jeep Wagoneer....
