i stumbled across a Caterham offering of what looks like a LM Prototype - kit is built for a 2.0T Ford 4 cyl - but I bet others would fit also.   Unfortunately, it's a "track only" car so something else for the road will have to be found.  IMO a 206P or even a 330P4 or similar modified for the road would be great but I'm launching into a whole 'nuther conversation!      Modifying a street car by changing out the engine is a big job but making a race car road worthy is a order of magnitude greater.  

The Acsari, and the cars you mentioned: Noble and Ultima are all awesome cars!   But when considering upgrading the engine of virtually any car, the engineering and manufacturing costs always brings reality back into the picture and makes me reconsider.    IMO the truth is, anything I think of has already been created....

But it's still nice to discuss....

I think it is Ultima or Noble that has a big list of drop in motors......LS7, 911 motors I seem to recall seeing. At that point a Ferrari motor would seem fun and justifiable.....imagine getting the F12 motor into a kit with a sequential box? 

Since I started this mess, I think the conversation should divert over to Caterham 7s, and various kit cars built to handle. Exomotive makes a Miata stripper kit for several K which looks enticing when combined with a very cheap '90s Miata. 

Caterham is clearly superior and cooler, but the price differential is notable. ~$10-15k vs. $35-100k....at least talking brand new and ordering it yourself.

I came across an older Scottie Saidel email the other day praising the virtues of the Lotus/Caterham 7 chassis......inspiring stuff.

I know it's a nightmare in terms of engineering and cost but this is just a dream right?   I used to think putting a Honda V6 or L4 in my MGB would be fun but the engineering always turned be against it, besides, if I want a MGB with a better, lighter engine I may as well buy a Miata that someone else has put the engineering effort into?     Plus there are already kits to put V8s and V6s into the MGB with the engineering done.

if you look around you can usually find a kit already put together with most options like you want.  However, the Caterham project sounds workable - I believe it is designed to take a large variety of engines.  Small displacement Ferrari engines may be on the list, who knows?   If putting a kit car together like the Caterham opens the door to a whole world of possibilities.  Search Google for Kit Cars and you'll find a wealth of cars, engines and transmission possibilities....

I know what you're thinking.....there are other motors that make more sense in terms of weight, power, reliability. Of course....but this is an F motor we're talking about! The most important part of a Ferrari. :)

The firing order of the Dino V6 is similar to the V12.....they sound like mini V12s, no? hehe. 

Originally the idea came from seeing Elises with the plebian Celica motor.....and I remembered that the Dino motor went into the lighter Stratos for nice results. Caterhams weighing about 1000 lbs less than an Elise probably makes even more sense.

Just have to figure out what transmission to put in, and make that work. Not sure if the mid to front engine deal would be an issue. Maybe go all out and get that Dino transmission in there, with the gated shifter too!

And as expensive as Dinos are these days to buy as a whole car, I can't imagine the crate motor being any more expensive than it was a few years ago.

Of course once you are braced and accepting of this idea, the next level is to source an NOS 166 Mille Miglia V12, and do the same thing. LOL.

I've limited the displacement to around 2.5 liters, but if you feel we can go bigger and still be ok I'm fine with it. :)

All of this has to be better than a V12 in a Jeep Wagoneer....
