Re: Converting a US 308 motor to a Euro 308 motor

Wow, if 308s are 50-70k, then all I need to do is sell mine and then I could afford to rebuild its motor!!!

What I'd love to do for my car with 107k miles is one of the following:

i) Rebuild mine basically back to stock, perhaps with higher compression pistons and other minor upgrades as available, or
ii) Punch mine out (interesting thread on f-chat right now about a Nick's Forza ferrari 4.0L conversion), or
iii) Put in a fresh 328 motor (preferably Euro),
iv) Put in a fresh 308 motor (preferably Euro).

All I really need is rings on one bank (four cylinders), but it would be foolish to pull the motor, separate the gearbox, and then work on just one bank and put new rings in. If the engine comes out and partially apart, then the whole job needs to be done, and I can't afford any of that right now. I wish I had the space to do this myself, not to mention the expertise. I'm not completely ignorant -- I've torn apart my '57 Bel Air V8 (265 ci) but I had someone else put it back together. I've done head gaskets on my '39 Rolls-Royce P-III (7.4L V-12) but we didn't have to tear the motor apart and I had the valve job done by a shop. I've done cam belts on my 308 several times. But to pull the motor and tear it apart -- I think I'd have no real problem doing the disassembly, but I'd have to rely on someone with experience to put it back together (I think). It would be so easy to just drop a freshly re-done (or at least well maintained) motor in there.

Decisions decisions....

Correct me if I'm wrong but are 308s not a 25-30k car anymore?

Everything I'm seeing is 50-70k....

What appreciation of the 308s?  The crazy money is chasing early 911s...

Am I right in noting that this $25-30k engine build would have paid for itself the last few years with the appreciation of the 308 market?

Carl notes “There is a Forza article from 2 years ago where a 308 owner had a 360 crank installed plus . . .”

Forza – February, 2013.  Snowball Express.  “Approx 340 hp for $25 to $30k . . . about 6k more than a rebuild.”
