Rick,

For a great read, check out 'Wings on My Sleeve', Eric Brown's biography. Read the Kindle version last year, absolutely riveting.

On the heels of this thread.... For those of you who have a penchant for this sort of thing, there is a wonderful documentary now on NetFlix - Memories of a WWII Hero: Captain Brown's Story. Eric Brown (CBE) was Britain's greatest test pilot and IMHO, second only to Neil Armstrong in history.  Capt. Brown flew more aircraft and had more carrier landings than can be imagined by a contemporary aviator.  He "thought" himself out of situations that killed many lesser men.  He was small in stature and huge in accomplishment.

For my money the producers wasted time with artsy shots and condemning Nazi war crimes that would have been better spent telling Capt. Brown's story and exploits.  But what is there is the real deal from one of "the greatest generation".  Enjoy!

Hey Clyde, Go to your mailbox. The current issue of Smithsonian Air & Space has a great article on the Blackbird pilots.

Erik, Clyde, Sled Driver was a great book.  The new version is even better.   If any of you are a fan of Sled Driver, Brian has released a new updated version of the book and both go along with "The Untouchables" which was his follow on to the original Sled Driver.  Now that I'm retired an my days of flying CAP for the SR's over the Barents are long behind me I've moved back to Northern Calif. and live very near Mr. Shul and have talked with him many times and visited his Studio/Gallery in Marysville (Just outside of Beale where the Blackbirds roosted).

Rich Graham is a great guy and we've had several conversations over the years ( I chased him down at the Pentagon an made a HABU pitch at him in the 80s).  Rich has also authored a number of books (4 or 5 now) which are all great reads if you are into this.

As I mentioned in my F1 rant, my heroes are the designers (Murray, Tyrrell, Brawn, etc) but for anyone who purports themselves as an engineer, the GOD of all modern day engineers is Kelly Johnson.   He too has an autobiography just called "Kelly" but perhaps the best book regarding the A12/SR71 and all its variants is by Kelly's protege and successor, Ben Rich simply called "Skunkworks".  Ben designed the inlet spike/throat/doors on the SRs and if you don't understand what that means to the speed of the aircraft, you are truly missing a monstrous achievement from the mind of man.  And it still stands today.  It was a sad day when they retired the SR71s...  both times.

Thanks for sharing that video, Clyde.  I'll call Rich and find out if that will be released as a DVD?   It's about time I make another donation to the JT Vida foundation.

Sled Driver is a great book But nothing like the interview which is long on the link I sent out It covers everything from pilot selection to mission profile bases Dets airframe performance Most of what he says was classified at the secret level years ago He even talks of camera resolution which was un heard of and highly classified And great book to read on this subject since this is what I did on another level is the the book The Big Safari Happy holidays to all And yes your son is lucky indeed to see a national asset such as that everyday

If you get bored this holiday season, I highly recommend reading “Sled Driver”.

Here is a link to the pdf (http://mirror.xwl.me/Sled%20Driver.pdf) as they typically are about $500 on Amazon for a used copy.

Erik very lucky to live just a few miles down the road from 60-6930, one of the original A12s from the program, my son sees it 2x a day going to and from school...

SR-71 Cockpit Checkout

by ErikJohnston This video is available for purchase. Please contact me if you would like to purchase a dvd. Autographed copies by Richard Graham are available as well. Email me at veterantales [at] gmail.com

Richard Graham was nice enough to give us a cockpit checkout in both the pilot and RSO stations. We shot this on location at the Frontiers of Flight Museum at Love Field Dallas Texas. This simulator was used to train every operational SR pilot before they ever set foot in the actual plane.

Here is he link to the entire interview I did with Rich. I hope you like it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CeBu6mRDaro&feature=c4-overview&list=UUYYT43aHuHaVcdbuJ4YYCjw
