A faulty gauge is quite rare. Pulling
the fuel gauge requires removing steering wheel, unplugging all dash gauges from
beneath the dash, and removing the entire gauge assembly. Doable but not
the place to start.
Typical 'bad fuel sensor' symptoms are : that the gauge works fine when gas
tank is full but as gas is used the gauge suddenly drops to empty, due to a
broken rheostat wire within the sensor...part way down the sensor. Note
that the float arm moves up/down the sensor rheostat. There is always the possibility of a bad ground at the
sender (top of left fuel tank)A bad ground will produce low readings at ALL tank levels. p |
--- Begin Message ---The 308 fuel 'SENDER' commonly goes bad, requiring an easy replace. A faulty gauge is quite rare. HOWEVERThere is always the greater possibility of a bad ground at the sender (top off left tank) See attached diagram. The usual 'bad sensor' symptoms are that the gauge works fine above a full tank then suddenly goes to empty, due to a broken rheostat wire part waydown the sensor. (The float arm moves up/down the rheostat). A bad ground will produce low readings at ALL tank levels. pAttachment: FuelGauge.jpg
