Hi Friends,

I added the FI update to my Testarossa and it helped the idle problem a little bit, but not enough. That was the second time I've attempted repairs. The first time was just balancing airflow. So here comes the third time. BTW, I've gotten really good at removing and reinstalling the air cleaner!

So this third time I'm going all the way back to first principles. Its coming apart as necessary, to reset the throttle plates to 1/4 turn off of fully closed, and verified to be correct. Remember, this setting is not the idle air but rather, the minimum position for the butterflies so they don't 'stick' or are damaged by closing. Equally important, those big butterflies are very poor at metering air at tiny openings. Therefore, they should be carefully adjusted to all but completely 'closed' leaving idle air metered by bypass valves. I suspect that one of the butterflies isn't closing properly.

When the throttle  is closed gently, the engine comes to idle, if unstable. When 'blipped' the butterflies slam shut and the engine dies. I am guessing that the idle air is incorrectly set to compensate for an inconsistant butterfly stop. Or the moon could just be in the wrong phase.

Anyway, as the weather clears this week, the TR is coming back home for the charming third try. I believe step-changes come from perseverance. Witness the starter repair to a decades-old problem! I shall persevere. It will yield! We will win - damn it!
