I agree with Matt. Thought V8 styling was in a dry spell from the 328 (too fiddled with) to the F430. When I saw a 458 for the first time in Tokyo, I actually said "wow".

F430 offered three pedals till about 2008 and what a delightful vehicle it is to drive ... while the F1 version of it is a grumpy, stuttering baulking nitwit (though the Scuderia version of superfast F1 seemed to resolve all the niggling problems of the normal F1 of that model.)  Personally, I prefer the 430 appearance in the Scuderia body (not the normal F430 body with it's wraparound style-of-the-day bumpers) and still can't stomach the 458 Italia (and the Speciale only a little less worse ...) so I think the F488 takes a bad deal and plays a decent hand with it.  I even liked the 360 in its day.  If you catch it front a good angle, view of the engine compartment in the 360 is pure genius.  Still, that's a backhanded compliment, because the 360 marked the beginning of a new era of compromised design for Ferrari, in my humble.  One of my definitions of the appeal of Ferrari from day one -- in practically every vehicle they've ever made for public roads or race tracks -- has been to say that they are beautiful from any and every angle.  Not so today.  You really have to walk around the La Ferrari and find your preferably, les obnoxious perspective to see the appeal in the thing -- I think the whole appeal of it is the elitist exclusivity of it.  The humble F430 6 spd is common and unloved, but to me, it's the pick of the litter.  But then again, I don't have one ... and my 2014 GT3 sits in the garage because it's just not that much fun to drive slowly ... and shame of shames, my next car ordered is a Tesla P85D ... which will be quicker than anything in the garage ... 0 - 60 in 3.1 sec.  What has the world come to ?

All the new cars will have manumatics

The manufactures can track clutch usage and wear data points and prevent idiots from down shifting from 6 to 2 and over revving the engine !

Causing engine failures and unnecessary warrantee claims and the like 

Ferrari learned a hard lesson with the 360 which was the last one they made with a stick 

  Ask BMW what happened with the M 5/6 series when they offered a straight stick!

Secondly - I like the car, I think it has a neat, updated, aggressive look.  I like it better than the 458, which I liked better than the F430, which I liked better than the 360, which I really didn't care for much at all (except the race cars I worked on way back then...).  I always thought that the front fender line of the stock 360 looked an awful lot like a Hyundai Tiburon.

 

Thirdly - regardless of what anyone else does (McLaren, Lambo, etc...  Porsche excepted here), they're still "wannabe's" in my book.  They'll always be trying to catch up.  Only Porsche seems to have the same road car/racing car pedigree as Ferrari.  So if I were a regular Ferrari buyer, I really wouldn't care if some of those others had more hp - for the pedigree reason, as well as reasons Adam expounded upon (usefulness on road v. track, etc.).

 

Finally - regarding Rob's comment below - wasn't there some announcement recently that the 458, perhaps in some limited edition (??), was going to be offered w/ a 6 speed stick?  While the paddles might be pretty "trick", there's nothing like a stick to seperate the men from the boys.  IMNSHO.  ;-)
