I suspect Peter, Doug and I - along with many others out there -  were spoiled to have grown up in the 60s.   It was such a magical time for car enthusiasts.  Along with the stuff Doug mentioned, we had the likes of C Chapman and E Ferrari at the peak of their game.  Bruce McLaren, Dan Gurney, the Porsche family and Jack Brabham all built dynasties that still continue.   Each were amazing in their own ways - all contributed designs and inventions that are still in use in racing and many are used by the public.  There were many others who contributed to  the world of racing in the 60s and 70s but IMO the intrusion of the government into vehicle design that started in 1968 has slowly pushed innovation into an area where people like those above will never have a chance to show their brilliance.

For me, F1 has been on a downward spiral for a long time.  I think I really started losing interest in F1 when Senna was killed.  I think the safety measures FISA imposed following his accident that pushed me farther away -- not that I am against safety, but it looked like they went too far in some directions that were not really effective IMO.  The strange qualifying sessions (again IMO) pushed me away again - to the point I rarely watched F1 anymore.  I would usually watch Monaco because it's such a carnival but the others I lost interest in.  This was a major change for me - I used to eat, sleep and dream about F1 - so this change didn't come easily.  I also think the new courses were a disappointment for me - they seem so antiseptic and devoid of character.   I'll take Spa or Monza any day over the courses in China, Indonesia or the Middle East events.  But life is about change  -   but these changes were too much for me.

OTOH, I still enjoy LeMans and get frustrated when they make finding which channels or dot com they are televising the various segments on.  It's like they are trying to make it difficult to watch.   I know it was on a website - but it had no commentators - only cameras at various places - it was entertaining but I never thought I'd miss the commentators so much (after a while).    ;-)  but I did.

But if that's your thang, Rock on!

I stopped being into it after the 1990s. I can't say specifically why, but generally speaking, I just don't see the relevance of it to the general automotive world, or in another way, I don't relate it to street cars. Okay, so there is some trickle down effect with advanced electronics and composites but this is still exotic and luxury car-territory.

I prefer rally racing as the best showcase for driver abilities and isn't that a primary reason to watch cars race? Going around the same circle, over and over again for an hour-and-a-half gets dull fast (at least there are left AND right turns in F1. I can't watch more than a few seconds of NASCAR without being bored to death). I can only imagine how boring the recent Australian race must have been by the few reports I've read.

Another thing that hasn't drawn any interest with me are the last few years of F1 design have been hideous. After the Ferrari 641, there hasn't been a beautiful-looking car since.

Peter

P.S. The last time I was at an F1 race was Montreal in 1991 (when I lived there. Moved to Vancouver in '96).

No German Formula 1 Grand Prix this year. First time since 1960 (I think). I have been to both (Hockenheim 1987 and Nurburgring 2009).
Think about this:
German team (Mercedes) as the World Champion.
German driver (Rosberg) in that team.
German driver (Vettel) world champion 4 times driving for Ferrari.
German driver (Hulkenberg) with great potential.

Still the Germans don't want to pay the price.

Lowest number of starters in a race since 1958 (15).

Crisis ? what crisis ?

My 2 cents!
Michael Savard (1981 308 GTSi)
P.S.: I have my ticket for the Canadian Grand Prix
