If you and your Audi friend are searching for alternative sensors, don't be put off on one unit if the thread size is different, but the electrical specs match. Most hydraulic suppliers offer reducer bushings/adapters in multiple thread types and sizes and even metric-to-inch conversions.

Peter,

Thanks for the response.  The mechanic is a local independent (Philadelphia area), Motorcar Makeovers.

Thanks also to Clyde and Lash for reaching out to me to offer help.  I need to try and contact each of you gentlemen later today.

Can someone tell me if the temperature sending unit is the same as what I see listed in a 512TR Spare Parts Catalogue" as a "cooler temperature sensor" (#154283) and not, for example, the "water temperature sensor" (#125769, of which there are evidently two)?

A friend happened to be over yesterday on a completely unrelated matter and said he might be able to help me.  He's an extremely experienced nonprofessional mechanic who does absolutely everything himself on his Audis (but no Ferrari experience), and is a perfectionist with deep electrical-related knowledge.   He said that if the sending unit's electrical specs could be identified he might be able to find me a much less expensive replacement Bosch unit.  Anyone know a source for such information?  I gather that part of what he has in mind is identifying the electrical output of the sending unit at various coolant temperature input readings.
