This is not just a Volkswagen problem – they’re just the first ones to be caught.

R&T or C&D did a story months ago that was obviously more prescient than they knew (or triggered the independent watchdog to test) about how sophisticated ECUs were now and how it would be easily possible to have an ECU recognize when it was participating in an EPA test and adjust accordingly.

I will be interested to see whether the EPA runs the full fines – which I believe can be in excess of $30k PER VEHICLE. VW could weather that storm if they had to, but when smaller or less financially stable manufacturers also get caught, they would not. I certainly wouldn’t put it past the EPA to try to kill off the industry entirely if they had the opportunity, but I suspect political pressure would be brought to bear to rescue US manufacturers. Less clear on groups like VAG that have US manufacturing presence…

I'm sure this will kinda put dirt in the gears of the process of VAG buying Red Bull F1 and potentially Cosworth...

But at least the CEO took responsibility and left.  I'm sure the cancer runs deeper within VAG but it was reassuring to have a Corporate type not come up with a carefully worded lie intended to provide culpable deniability and a back door should more evidence mount.    There is some hope for this world.

VW probably figured no one would see their emissions "rigging" of their diesels these days!

I understand that even Volkswagens had those stickers in the day, but nobody could see through them at the time! J

Hello

In the 1970’s US bound Ferrari’s, at least California cars, had a see thru emission sticker affixed to the left side of the windshield.

I am trying to gather up samples of all of them.

Please snap a picture of yours.

Much appreciated
