Ahh, yes, I remember him mentioning a 5-bladed shutter. I don't know if he was able to equip his projector with one. I saw a few examples he did and they came out really well, although with him being a (long time ago) retired professional photographer, he's always been hands-on and never satisfied - always wants to refine to perfection!

Peter,

Glad you enjoyed my foray into the past.

I've played with the method your Dad used with some success. There are tricks to help reduce flicker, but none work really well. You can find special projectors with a 5-blade shutter, but still a lot of work. There is a lot of information on the different cine to digital processes on the internet. This time, I went the professional route with a local business near me called DVDyourMemories. One of the pluses was that I could hand deliver my film and not risk it via post.

They scan each frame individually and then use software re-animate it. As part of the process they used software to reduce jitter, correct color and exposure problems. Cost was about 42 cents per foot, not cheap, but I feel the results were worth it. They were busy and it took them about 3 weeks to get my 3,300 feet of film back to me on a hard drive.

The film will continue to disintegrate, but the digital copies should remain pristine for years to come. I made backup's of the hard drive and keep the original one in a fireproof file cabinet. Easy to burn DVD's from the files or share like I did this footage.

Cheers,
