I finally put the new vacuum by-pass valve (Bosch 0280160111) on. I can't say it solved the problem. I let the temperature go to 195 once back in the city streets. The backfires came back in 2nd but not in 3rd gear when staying at around 3000 rpm. They are just small annoying backfires that the passenger does not even hear sometimes. But they are there. And tonight was a very cool night. I'm sure next summer in high heat and humidity, that's when the problem happens the most, it will all come back.

 

I did solve another problem though. And I'm very happy about that. There was always a strong smell of burned oil when I came back from my routine trips. I just thought for a long time that it was typical of Ferraris. And in a typical 1 1/2 to 2 hour trip, I needed a full liter of oil to add.

Well I saw that the oil tube in TAV 9 #63 part #107783 (51 pounds at maranello Parts U.K.) was all wet with oil, it's very easy to touch it with your fingers, and the engine block at the bottom of the tube (it's about 6-7 inches long) was full of dirty black burned oil. The part under the clip at the top was broken/cut. So hot oil under high pressure was VERY SLOWLY leaking.

I put the new tube on yesterday. Very easy job, you need to lift the water reservoir. Well tonight there was no smell of burned oil coming out of the engine bay.

87, it was, I asked my wife of 48 years, and she got out her diaries and found the log entries for 1987 and there it was me trying please Shaun the instructor at the Jim Russell School.

In 84 we went to European GP at Nurberg and brought back 2 suit cases of Porsche 928 parts (virtually paid for the trip).

I 86 we went Hockinhiem and took European delivery of our Porsche 944 Turbo.

In any case I was just getting ready to send you the email saying 1987.

Did the part for you 308 fix the problem?

If the schedule for 2016 stays, I think there will be 4 races in 5 weekends in july or again 3 in 4 weekends. I don't have the schedule with me.

If it was, I did the Basic and Advanced, School called and told me I could do the Advanced because of a schedule change. I did not know the F1 race was cancelled until we flew in to Montreal ( we would do Montreal and Detroit on the same trip.)

No, it's not Steve McQueen. Brought back good memories. In 1984 I was a mechanic at the Jim Russell Racing School here at Mont-Tremblant in Quebec. Then in september or october, we had the school's finals at Riverside. Awesome.

A while back I posted some photos of RIR back in the day. Just got my old 8mm movies digitized, so here is some footage of me running a speed trial in my 1652 MG TD (#21) back in February of 1968. 

All taken with a wind up regular 8mm camera, so no nifty engine noises. My uncle rode along and took the in car footage. Had to wind the camera back up just as we came into Turn 6, so missed seeing the old boilerplate close up.

Bought the MG in 1965 and still own it 50 years later. Some other nifty cars in the background, this was before they were too valuable to play with. Didn't get a picture of the brand new SAAB that had been rolled going it 6 and then slid on it's nose and roof into the boilerplate. Dealer tags and plastic still over the pristine interior.
