My pseudo in-laws in LA had a 2008 with about 95K on it until just recently.   
While they often waste money lavishly, he's always been good about spending 
money wisely to keep his cars in great shape... retired financial genius (good 
to have around) but couldn't tell you which end of the screwdriver you use to 
pound nails.   They experienced the very issue you fear.  At first he thought 
the dog had peed on the tire.  After calling me, He had it towed in and they 
told him the right rear needed a handful of replacement parts.  He said do it.  
They told him the smart thing would be to do both sides at the same time... 
Again, he said do it.  They told him the cost.  He now has a 2013 S8 with 18K 
on the clock.
