I think the majority of that money (pushing $1B) comes from TV coverage with the ticket sales going to the track owners.  Seems like I read that a long time ago.

Maybe this explains why they have concentrated solely on F1. Other forms of racing can be left to the privateers because the prize money in those series aren't so lucrative...
