Learned to drive a manual on the family Ford 8N tractor. Younger brother and I were too small to crank it, so we would position the crank just so and slide off the hood onto it to crank the engine over. Fortunately, low compression and it usually started first thing.

Took my driving test in my parents 1949 Ford coupe, 3 on the tree with overdrive. Hopped up engine with a Mercury stroker crank, if you wound it really tight you could get it into first overdrive. Turned the 3 speed into 6 speeds.

First automatic I ever owned was a 1985 S-15 Jimmy, was that a every POS. Bought the automatic because every manual we test drove had unbelievable clutch shudder.

How many of us first learned to drive on a stick?

I know we all know how to drive one, but did we all learn on one?

Helluva an experience. I think overall it's better than learning on an auto.

ps - I also learned on non power steering, which is where the obsession must come from. :)
