Picture this – April 6, 2013, Festival of Speed held at the AAA Autoclub Speedway in Fontana, CA.  This year’s center of attention – 50 911’s from the first year of production, a 1964 901 through a 2013 911 S Coupe.  The historic event had one car from each year starting with the 901 loaned to the event by Petersen Automotive Museum.  50 Years of the Porsche 911.

Because I had to work early that Saturday, our daughter, her husband and our grandson got to drive our 1971 T that was picked to represent “1971” the 101.5 miles to the event.  Not a lot of room in the back seat for 8 year old Anthony but then 8 year olds fit back there just fine.

Rich said it was a car that brings the family together - - no TV, no A/C, no electric wind up windows, a funky single speaker radio and no neck snapping acceleration.  He said we actually had to TALK to EACH OTHER.  It did ride well though he said.  They seemed to have a good time based on the pictures and Rich met a lot really nice people.

Now what I find important is when we had our oxidized Bahia Red car painted – this is a big deal, not often done – so let’s do it right.  Bahia Red is a kinda washed out brick red.  But Bill Stoessel from Original Coachcraft (his dad got his start in Hollywood rebodying Cadillacs for the movie stars in the 40’s and 50’s) had this can of, uh, red paint left over from Sandy Sigoloff’s Speedster respray.  Sandy had an eye for red paint - - - yeah, Rosa Corsa.  Heh heh.

And so it is today, we have two red cars in the garage from two different marques but they are the same color.  My my.  Oh, yeah – the 911 T (T for Touring – a ringer for Touring Race class) was the entry level 911 – came with a four speed.  Oh well.  That can be fixed.

Many interpret that meme as the manual transmission, but it’s equally correct about the whole car – especially an old Porsche. Not enough tech in that car to Google yourself out of a paper bag, and therefore wholly useless to Millennials.

America hasn't traditionally been a great manual transmission driving country, but these days with stickshifts as rare as ever.....I guess the meme is right. :)

Don't get me started on millennials.....

If ever there's anything that makes me feel like an old man instantly, it's relating to their work ethic and entitlement.

Whenever I'm feeling lazy or under-performing, I can think about them and right away feel good.

I hadn’t heard that about the Greeks, but I do appreciate it. I try to teach my technician’s the same attitude about our systems – it matters what’s in a ceiling, or behind a rack or in a junction box that may never be opened again. Pride in your work is what you show where you think no one else will look. Sadly, a dying attitude and nearly impossible to teach the millennials we’ve had…

Beautiful car – beautiful garage Gary.

Going back in time early -1950s thru early 60’s – Porsche racing was really involved in the 1500 cc class.  Ferrari, Osca, Maserati, Kurtis, Jaguar and all the other big boys played in their own Gonzo Killer sand box.  But Porsche, at that time, was content to be a big fish in the smaller pond.

As with most cars of that era – engines were hand built and tested.  Since they were smaller capacity, tolerances made a great difference.  Then, every once in a while, all the stuff randomly came thru such that they produced a motor that was stronger and more powerful than the average bear.  These were set aside – they were noted: “Hoch Leistung” – high performance.  These engines were placed in factory race cars or sold to noted privateers.  The rest is history.

So what’s that about?  Well, Ferrari for the most part is hand built and as such every once in a while, my personal belief, is a car will come thru that randomly has been built perfectly.  Gary – your garage deserves such a car.

Now for the secret - - - did you buy a perfect car and then build the perfect garage?  Or did you build the perfect garage and your car appreciates it and gives its owner, in return, a perfect car?

If it’s the later – I have a lot of work to do tho Terri would be most happy.

The Greeks, more than several thousand years ago, would paint the inside of cabinets and otherwise finish off areas of a house no one was ever going to see - - - why?  Because they believed the Gods knew and saw and would appreciate the owner more.  They just might be some truth to that – thousands of years later.
