During the rebuild on my QV motor, I ordered the nuts that hold the injectors in place from Ferrari UK.  They were ~$50 a pop.  There will be a further separation of those that can keep these cars running and those that slide down the deferred maintenance cliff.  

As for the 348s and 355s, maybe those will replace garden gnomes in posh neighborhoods.  If I run out of money, I can always push my Rolls Royce into my neighbor’s swimming pool for a laugh.

Kidding aside, one bad thing about 308 values going higher is that part-outs become more rare.

There is certainly a lot of truth in a claim that a Daytona is not cheap to maintain, but on the flip side, it is a simple enough car that at least with a CNC (or a willingness to pay someone who has a CNC), you ought to be able to always keep it on the road.

I’m not claiming it is a rational way to spend money.  It is more akin to buying an old “war bird”; there is history to it that I think it is fun to preserve and participate in.

I’ve actually looking into this a lot, and the Daytona seems to actually not be all that bad.  Having talked to a fair number of owners and shops, the cars that often get mothballed for lack of some bit of kit are the Boxers and C4s.

Mind you, even in those cases, the claim is generally that one could get the car on the road, but usually the required measures would result in some changes that could not be reversed; often to parts that would be really hard to source at this point; i.e., folks decide to wait for something to miraculously become available, rather than start tearing into their car.

I fear that the day may come when the FI and/or ignition system of my 308QV might become hard to service.  One could always revert to carbs or something, but it would be sad to lose the originality of the car; i.e., a lot of us might be in a similar boat someday...

At least far as "good condition" Daytona's go (which is the only cars I
really follow)(and note that this excludes any truly low-production

1995: $500k

My impression was that in 2010-ish valley, not that many cars moved, but in

That said, I'm not 100% convinced that prices are going to plummet anytime
soon.  I think most of the buyers in the US in the last few years have been
from the US (at least for things like Daytonas), and nothing is really
crashing here at the moment, other than oil prices.

A funny thing that one seller told me back in the 2010 valley was that a
surprising amount of the Daytona market is made up of car dealership owners
(the guy was a dealership owner himself), and thus, Daytona's got cheap when
car sales tanked.  If true, things don't look good for me... :)

Sadly, I actually want prices to hold for a bit longer, because I'm in no
position to shop for anything for a good while.

This peak is about 2-3X the late 80's peak and the lows after that got to
probably down to 20% of peak on a very rough recollection.

Remember, past performance is not indicative of future results, your mileage
may vary and contents may have settled during shipping!  ?
