Oh my God, you have a Laforza? It's been years since I've heard about/seen one (if I remember correctly, they were never imported into Canada. The only times I would have seen them is "back in the day" on our family trips down to the sunnier parts of the U.S. [CA, TX, FL, etc]).

The other advantage we have today is this very medium we're communicating to each other right now. It would have been a more difficult and probably a fruitless endeavour if I had bought my GT4 prior to the internet. Like you with your rear window, I shop around everytime I need some part. It's worked out that I'm loyal to three parts suppliers. Their online catalogs are only a click away. At least in the '90s and earlier, FAF published their "Survival" catalogs and sales flyers.

Peter, you are correct.

You can make anything today...cheap. I need a factory rear window for my POS Laforza Magnum and a guy in the mid west has 10 OEM pieces factory sealed. He wants $275 plus a lot of shipping to get it back east.

A shop in CO can make them from a blank complete with the defroster lines and etched factory logo for $200.

I can't remember who it is on Ferrarichat but there's a German fellow who makes/made modern replacement circuit boards for the 308 series Digiplex ignition boxes*. It uses more robust components (I believe the pressure transducer is a weak point in the originals). Gut your old box and slap in the new board. The earlier Digiplex boxes potted the circuit board in silicone, so it's easy (but tedious) to pick it out.

The beauty with this era of car is that the technology - advanced for the time - is rather simple today. The timing map relied solely on three inputs: TDC, RPM and MAP. That's it. One of the manuals I have plots out all of the advance curves based on manifold pressure. The circuitry is simple and a DIY nerd can even print out a board and solder on the components (like he did ^ ).

Same thing with Jetronic injection, especially the CIS. Purely mechanical. Only simple thermo and vacuum switches fine-tune running. The cars equiped with O2 sensors are a little trickier, but like I've said before, the circuitry isn't out-of-this-world complex.

I'm sorry to hear that Erik got burned on the injector nuts, but I'm sure those could have been turned out on a lathe for less...

Maybe I should start a new business

* I'm not referring to the Dinoplex boxes used on Daytonas, C4s and Dino 246s. Those can be directly replaced by $200 MSD 6AL CDI boxes from NAPA...

There is certainly a lot of truth in a claim that a Daytona is not cheap to maintain, but on the flip side, it is a simple enough car that at least with a CNC (or a willingness to pay someone who has a CNC), you ought to be able to always keep it on the road.

I’m not claiming it is a rational way to spend money.  It is more akin to buying an old “war bird”; there is history to it that I think it is fun to preserve and participate in.

I’ve actually looking into this a lot, and the Daytona seems to actually not be all that bad.  Having talked to a fair number of owners and shops, the cars that often get mothballed for lack of some bit of kit are the Boxers and C4s.

Mind you, even in those cases, the claim is generally that one could get the car on the road, but usually the required measures would result in some changes that could not be reversed; often to parts that would be really hard to source at this point; i.e., folks decide to wait for something to miraculously become available, rather than start tearing into their car.

I fear that the day may come when the FI and/or ignition system of my 308QV might become hard to service.  One could always revert to carbs or something, but it would be sad to lose the originality of the car; i.e., a lot of us might be in a similar boat someday...

I think John is about right below.

At least far as "good condition" Daytona's go (which is the only cars I
really follow)(and note that this excludes any truly low-production
cars)(and excludes any "condition 1" cars or "condition 4" cars), the
sequence of peaks-and-valleys is something like this:

1995: $500k
2000: $125k
2005: $400k
2010: $200k
2015: $700k

My impression was that in 2010-ish valley, not that many cars moved, but in
the 2000 valley, there was a lot of sales activity.  Personally, I think
this is because the 2005 peak was not driven so much by speculation.

The current peak might be more like the 1995 peak, so I would think that
$200 levels might be reached again.  Though obviously, I'm biased, because I
still fantasize about trying to buy one... :)

That said, I'm not 100% convinced that prices are going to plummet anytime
soon.  I think most of the buyers in the US in the last few years have been
from the US (at least for things like Daytonas), and nothing is really
crashing here at the moment, other than oil prices.

A funny thing that one seller told me back in the 2010 valley was that a
surprising amount of the Daytona market is made up of car dealership owners
(the guy was a dealership owner himself), and thus, Daytona's got cheap when
car sales tanked.  If true, things don't look good for me... :)

Sadly, I actually want prices to hold for a bit longer, because I'm in no
position to shop for anything for a good while.

This peak is about 2-3X the late 80's peak and the lows after that got to
probably down to 20% of peak on a very rough recollection.

Remember, past performance is not indicative of future results, your mileage
may vary and contents may have settled during shipping!  ?
