Well forget about it! I'm not doing all that. This is way out of my league.

I put black shoe polish on the leather part (shelf looking part) and it helped a lot. I'll probably put a second layer next weekend and then spray paint it with a clear. My 83 years old shoemaker, who had just fixed my seat once again for the third time in 15 years,  said he does that with leather shoes all the time, it should work on any other leather as well.

Remove side windows, remove rubber, remove rivets holding interior horizontal pieces that are covered by window rubber, go into engine compartment, using your 5 way articulated fore arm (or remove engine) go under the interior deck from the engine compartment, loosen 10mm nut holding I inch interior covered center piece, then the two parts just slide out.  Can’t recall if the three vertical pieces have to be removed first.  If so, invoke 5 way articulated fore arm again and this time remove 10mm nuts holding the covered piece below rear window from the engine compartment and cut out rivets on the two little triangular side pieces.

 

To replace – reverse the process.  PS – oh yeah, Me?  I forgot to bolt in the two top cover Tenax peg snaps which are used to hold the GTS top cover located behind the seats.  I have spent a year noodling over how to do “step (1)” that I forgot to do without undoing the whole mess (see above).**

 

Once done and replaced – you’ll be proud of the job you did.

 

Now Michael – all this is from my demented memory – I’ll bet there are folks out there who could find fault with my recollection.  It may be easier – it may be harder.  All I recall is if the curved rear glass is removed and during replacement – it has to be bent just - - - - this I<->I much.  Bend it too I<---->I much?  “SNAP”  Very unforgiving as it snaps into a thousand pieces.  Even if you find all the pieces and glue it back together – it still looks like hell.

** side note – I had to look up the name and spelling of that GTS top cover snap thingy – it’s Tenax.  Their web site shows snap pegs some of which are SHEET METAL THREADED SCREWS.  Hallelujah – my year old problem is solved. I won’t have to fish the nut in there and try to bolt it – I’ll poke a hole and screw it in.  And as David Townsend said to Michael Delany at the end of Lemans, the movie, when Delaney allows Porsche to win Lemans - “Thank you Michael.”

 

PSS – I believe that the Steve McQueen Lemans movie shows the ONLY transition between running across the track and jumping in the cars and the now “Indy car” rolling start.  (The reason Porsche cars traditionally have the ignition key on the drivers left).  The McQueen movie shows the cars already lined up, ass end pointing to their pits, drivers in the car, engines off.  When the flag is dropped, they blast off from an angled standing start.  The following years – the race is started with the cars rolling.
