YES!

I think I know who they are...

:)

I love solo Ozzy until "The Ultimate Sin". He always had the top notch musicians onboard...

Can't say I was ever *really* into metal, although I did enjoy Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and solo Ozzy back in the 80s (still like to pull out those three). I also had a few Grim Reaper albums, mainly because I thought the album art was cool, and I guess I enjoyed the music but now it seems so simplistic.

Meanwhile, Sunday I'm heading with my boys to Durham, NC to see Anderson/Rabin/Wakeman. I wonder how many folks here would recognize who they are, probably a few of you....

I'm surprised you listed Voivod... I didn't think they were known outside of Quebec, Canada.

I was into metal back in high school, but was also into grunge (of course, it was the '90s!), industrial rock, shoegaze and the whole alternative genre.

I'll include:

1- Skinny Puppy
2- Front Line Assembly
3- White Zombie
4- Killing Joke
5- Anthrax
6- Prong
7- Circle of Dust
8- Ministry
9- Carcass
10- Godflesh

I think one of the best names for a metal band was: "F--- You We're From Denmark"

Rob's link to CU's rise from the ashes was a lot of fun to read about. I have their first two albums and really like them. The title track on Frost and Fire is legendary and when you think about the timeframe, it was groundbreaking.

I also enjoyed the Metal Blade article and list of great recordings.

I agreed with many of the selections and offer my own list of top metal albums here...

1. Black Sabbath - "Black Sabbath" - literally the blueprint for heavy metal with so much progress and innovation for 1969. The Beatles were singing "All You Need Is Love"  two years before this came out!

2. Van Halen - "Van Halen" - the record that set the stage for all metal guitar work going forward. Once again, only 10 yrs separates some of the wonderful Beatles tunes and this sonic thunderstorm.

3. Fates Warning - "Spectre Within" - prog metal innovators, but essentially the height of technical and artistic brilliance in the metal world. "Orphan Gypsy" is one of my favorite musical recordings of all time. Period.

4. Voivod - "Killing Technology" - prog metal legends who brought together technical skill with sci fi lyrics and themes while pioneering artistic dissonant guitar chord usage.

5. Tension - "Breaking Point" - unknown band and unknown record which turned out to be the intersection of some serious talent and a terrific sound. This one is aging very well.

Honorable Mention - Mercyful Fate "Don't Break The Oath" - Riff overload and perfect 80s over the top metal production and editing. This is a gem...don't pay attention to the lyrics (and it's difficult to anyways).

What are your favorite metal albums?
