Light in the nose - was Miura vs. 250 GTO

Ahh, the 1960’s and sports cars – even CanAm super swoopy cars like Lola’s and McLaren’s turned turtle.  At Mid-Ohio (I think?).

Now here’s some grist for the P-Bug growler mills.  By 1967 the Porsche 911S was going faster than any previous street Porsches and experienced front end floaty problems too.  Initially they hid about 50 pounds of cast iron in the front bumper.   A better solution came in model year 1969.  For the 911’s and 912’s Porsche made two major body changes:  1) For the 911 they mounted two batteries (only one in the 912) in special compartments in the trunk just ahead of the front wheels; and, 2) they lengthened the wheel base by retaining the powertrain in the original position and moving the rear wheels rearward by a little more than two inches.

When I think back on how fast I wnet down some long hill in my ’66 VW bug – I shudder.  Of course I did other stupid things too like hopping moving freight trains.  Ahh the angel who looks over the youth.

That's scary indeed, considering part of the allure of a Daytona or Miura is a high speed cruise!

Oh well....keep it down to 110 then. :)

Same thing in a Daytona at about 130. Front end lifts far enough to make the steering wheel useless. Terrifying

Drive one with less than 1/8th of a tank of gas, get it up to 75 mph. Then punch it.

The front will get light enough that a change of underwear is in order.

In today's world, it may be a waste of time to explain anything to a millennial...   There are a few exceptions out there but most have had their minds rotted by those in the ivory tower.

But....

When I have these conversations I go to racing.  Point out how many Ferraris have won how many races and that the only way Lambos win any race is when they have their own series.

side note:  Many years ago at Concorso Italiano (when it was still at Quail) Lambo had a huge presence as they were unveiling a new cabriolet something.   I walked over and watched as they pulled the cover off and "Meh".   The rather obnoxious Lambo guy spent 10 minutes extolling the virtues of this car then looked off to the sea of Ferraris and asked.  Does anyone know what Ferrari means in Italian?  ...silence.   Then in a rather whiny voice he said "Oh, I wish I had bought a Lamborghini!".   Then he asked in a very manly voice "Does anyone know what Lamborghini means in Italian" and before he could utter a word an older Gent standing next to Mario (who was raffling his Lambo that weekend) said very loudly and imitating the same whiny voice "Oh, I wish I could win a race!"   The crowd erupted in laughter and the pitch guy turned red as the Ferraris he was trying to put down.

Is it a waste of time trying to explain to a 25 year old enthusiast why a 250 GTO is better than a Miura if he is inclined to think the opposite?

FWIW I'm not sure a Miura is better than a Daytona even if it looks nicer.

Discuss. :D
