78 GTS Rear Brake Shims – Part II

First thank you all for the input.  Quite helpful, really.

Now for what I’ve done.  Test mounted the rear calipers (no pads) to the uprights to see what’s what.

Results:  calipers are parallel to rotor BUT inside half way to close to rotor.  Nearly touching.

So THAT’s at least one of the reasons for the shims.

The inside caliper to rotor clearance nearly zero.  The outside caliper to rotor had about a 3 to 4 mm gap.

I need about 1.6 mm gap, caliper to rotor, per side – upper and lower which should center the rotor to the caliper.

Went to hardware store and purchased four hardened 12 mm metric washers for a base.  About the same diameter as the shims.

I’ll add Ferrari shims as needed.

Stay tuned.

Subject: 1978 GTS Rear Brake Caliper question

Hello

Awhile back I removed the rear brake calipers.  Funny thing – there are little black 2.5 cm washers of varying thicknesses:  .3mm to 1mm.  Part # 108918

OK – what are they used for?  Can I run without them?  If not what is the assembly objective?

Thanks to all the trivia guru’s out there

DOUG
