Nice. Did the Kanc in the 70's as part of the 24 Hour Tri State Rally in January across Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and back to Maine. It was early in the rally and in daylight so the views were spectacular.
We got about a foot of new snow during the rally. My navigator borrowed a friend's Datsun B-210 and we fitted 4 snow tires and extra driving lights. The car was well balanced and lack of power not a concern on snowy back roads.
Only went off once, into a soft snow bank at a downhill T intersection and were able to shovel out in a few minutes. Did OK overall and won one section outright. Met the great rallyist John Buffum who was competing.
Had to shake my head in amazement at the guy who thought it was a good idea to lend us his car and my navigator who sat through some harrowing driving on my part.
A few years later I spent two years of grad school in Hangover at Dartmouth where the temps got to minus 30 for a couple of weeks both Januarys.
Beautiful country up there.

For other folks, Clyde is referring to the Kancamagus Highway; one of the “famous” routes in the state.

Lebanon, NH, which is around the Dartmouth area, down to Westford, MA, which is “below” Nashua, NH, a little over the NH-MA border.
Drive is mostly over open rolling country, on well maintained roads. Usually, I only go down 3 days out of the work week, but 4 days is not uncommon, and 5 days happens more often than I would like.
The State Police are a little unforgiving if one strays much over 75mph, but take no notice below that.
I’ve often wondered how long the commute would take me if I opened the Turbo up to as fast as I felt comfortable with.
A funny feature of the car is that there is an alarm that you can set to go off at a particular speed; useful for 0-60 runs, because the redline comes-up so fast in first gear, but also a blessing for that 75mph threshold. Before I learned to set the alarm, I was accidentally drifting up to triple-digit speeds all the time. My guess is that cruising at 125mph+ would not be a problem, even though the roads are far from dead straight. Car is very calm over 100mph. Mind you, the QV is also rock solid at such speeds, but gives an impression of speed that the Porsche completely filters out. Actually, now that I think about it, maybe being insulated in this way is not such a good thing... :)

Mind you, before my move from from SF area a couple years back, I had a 100-mile-round-trip commute, but on urban freeways; total commute time was 2 hours with very little traffic, and up to 6 hours if one drove during rush hours. Current commute is 4 hours total, pretty much regardless of when I drive.
Net-net, I feel like I’m ahead of the game... :)
But yeah, I wanted to get a “land missile” that had a rep for 500k-miles between engine rebuilds. Researched for a long time, and much to my surprise, found only one car that really fit the bill; 996 Turbo. Who knew?

While I've also been on the list for close to 20 years, I rarely post, and I
think the only lister I've ever met face-to-face is John (at a Ferrari meet
during the early days). Even so, I'm always saving posts with interesting

Still have the Nero Metallic QV, though have to admit that I picked-up a
Porsche 996 Turbo a year-or-two back for my (then new) 200-mile-round-trip
commute. The Turbo is actually a pretty stand-up car; first P-car that I've
ever felt had a little bit of Maranello ethos in it.
Folks might like the following story. A co-worker (actually my boss) was
asking about Ferrari-vs-Porsche ownership, and after musing for a while (and
first giving him the Ferris Beuller line about "if you have the means"), I
summed it up thusly:
"It all depends on your personal sensibilities, and what you think you can
comfortably pull off; both cars are a little much in most day-to-day
contexts, but while the Porsche is like showing up to Casual Friday in a
Brooks Brothers suit, the Ferrari is like showing up in body paint..." :)
