If it’s just a DE car, then the most popular / well balanced trainers seem to be the E36 M3, any Boxster/Cayman, or the Miata. Nod to the Miata for being super cheap to run. First gen Boxster/Caymans are really cheap to acquire, but check for the IMS bearing fix on most, and they can have oil starvation problems without a baffled pan being added.

Some tracks (like VIR) will only let convertibles run in green/beginner DE events. Last year, embarrassingly enough at the FCA event there, my 355 got booted down to the green group AND they eliminated ALL passing in green because the 355 has no roll bars. I was not too popular that event, although the track only told the FCA of that insurance change the morning of or I would’ve brought a different car.

If you’re buying something that’s already race-prepped, then you’ll have a cage and those will be moot points. Lots of those cars out there. I see the most on 6speedonline.com or Winding Road if you’re shopping. Definitely cheaper to find one where someone has already done all the work to it, but a little harder to maintain since you don’t always know what they did or what the related quality of parts and work was. I think Dennis Liu still lurks on this list. He’s a crazed bulldog for finding ads for cars once he knows what you’re looking for.  J

Good luck!

Hey Guys,

I am considering prepping my first track dedicated car, and would love your suggestions for an appropriate first race car.  I currently have a 308 which I will keep in its pristine condition.

I was thinking of  a Boxter Spec Series prepped vehicle, but am not married to any vehicle right now.  This would be for entry level Drivers Education or limited racing in CO and CA.

Thoughts?
